Weather Alert: Ice Storm Predicted Sunday

Freezing rain mixed with sleet is expected to arrive in the area Sunday morning. A winter storm watch is in effect through late Sunday night.

The deep freeze is on its way and we aren’t talking about temperatures.

A winter storm watch is in effect Sunday morning until late Sunday night for DuPage County. Ice accumulation in excess of a quarter-inch is possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Freezing rain mixed with sleet is expected to arrive Sunday morning and continue throughout the day. Ice accumulations may cause tree limbs and power lines to be weighed down, and if winds increase, it could cause power outages, according to the weather service.

“Pavement and soil temperatures are below freezing. So any liquid precipitation will likely freeze on contact and result in very icy and dangerous travel conditions on untreated roadways,” according to the NWS.

However, this storm is still in the developing stages and any minor changes in predicted temperatures could result in significant changes to the the type of precipitation and resulting ice threat, the weather service said.
