The Aftermath: Residents Begin to Clean Up Flooded Basements

Scenes sadly reminiscent of 2010—and in the same neighborhoods.

The flood waters have receded now, roads are back open and life is getting back to normal. But for many, the process of recovery is just beginning, as Elmhurst residents clear out the remnants of their flooded basements.

The scene on the streets in southwest Elmhurst Friday morning was all too similar to images from the summer of 2010. Homes—both old and brand new—in all areas of Elmhurst suffered damage.

The National Weather Service reported Elmhurst received 7.26 inches of rainfall April 17 and 18. Minimal precipitation is forecast for Friday.

DuPage County Stormwater Management continues to operate all of its larger flood control facilities due to rainfall accumulated throughout the week, according to a statement released on Friday.

Precipitation raised elevations in Salt Creek and the West Branch DuPage River enough for DuPage County Stormwater Management to continue operations of the Elmhurst Quarry, as well as Fawell Dam in Naperville, Spring Creek Reservoir in Bloomingdale and the Wood Dale-Itasca Reservoir throughout the day Friday. Smaller, gravity operated facilities are also operating, according to the county.
