So, Just How Hot is it Going to Get?

Weather through Friday is looking crazy hot.

It's steamy out there, and it's likely to stay that way through next weekend in Elmhurst and the entire Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature today, Sunday, is expected to reach 92 degrees, and the high throughout the week will continue to be in the 90s. Add to that the heat index values, and it will feel more like 105 to 110 later in the week.

In a local weather alert, the NWS is warning of a "dangerous combination of heat and humidity" this week. Even overnight temperatures in Elmhurst this week are not expected to go much below 80 degrees.

Overnight Sunday, there is a 40 percent chance of strong, scattered thunderstorms, and that threat will continue into Tuesday. Storms could produce damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, heavy rain and frequent lightning. The greatest threat exists north of Interstate 80. But the storms are not expected to bring any relief from the heat.

While overexposure to UV radiation can cause a temporary sunburn, it can also lead to more serious, long-term, health problems such as skin cancer, premature aging, cataracts, eye damage and immune system suppression. Children are particularly at risk. DuPage County Health Department is reminding people to wear sunscreen and limit sun exposure.

An air-quality alert also has been issued by the NWS. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has declared Sunday an air pollution action day due to elevated pollution levels. People with respiratory problems are being advised to limit outdoor activity.
