Joliet Diocese Pays $1.9 Million Settlement to Oak Brook Man Hit by Elmhurst Priest

An Oak Brook man this week was awarded a $1.9 million settlement from the Catholic Diocese of Joliet for injuries he suffered after the motorcycle he was driving was hit by a car driven by an Elmhurst priest.
 
On Nov. 5, 2006, Father Raymond Garbin, then 69 and associate pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish in Elmhurst, was driving a car owned by the Diocese, according to information provided by the plaintiff's law firm. The car struck the rear of the motorcycle driven by 38-year-old Bill Egbert of Oak Brook when Egbert was stopped at a red light in Romeoville. The accident caused multiple injuries to Egbert, a former police officer. 

Father Garbin, who is now a senior priest at IC, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
 
The case was pending before Judge Susan O'Leary in the Circuit Court of Will County at the time of settlement. Egbert was represented by Cavanagh Law Group. The Diocese and Father Garbin were represented by Cassiday Schade.
