Get Ready for a Big Pain in the Neck—and Eventually Some Nice, Smooth Streets

Get ready for some longer travel times through Elmhurst.

The City has announced the resurfacing project for York Street will begin Tuesday. York will be resurfaced from Robert Palmer Drive (in front of the District 205 Center at 162 S. York) to Vallette Street.

The project will consist of patching, curb, gutter and sidewalk repair, drainage structure adjustments, milling, resurfacing and pavement marking. It is anticipated that the project, which is weather dependent, will be substantially completed by Nov. 30.

According to Civil Engineer Kim McGrew, the contractor’s normal working hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. During construction operations, traffic on York will be reduced to one lane. Two-way traffic will be maintained with flaggers during this period, and travel times through the work zone will increase. It is recommended that motorists use alternate routes.

District 205 schools most affected by this will be , and . The district is working with its transportation company to develop alternate routes.

“We understand that this will be challenging for some of our students and their families,” said District 205 Superintendent Dave Pruneau. “We thank them for their patience as we work to provide the best possible transportation solution in this situation.”
