Eastbound I-88 Ramp to Westbound I-290 Will Close Over Night This Week for Resurfacing

Closure won't affect too many travelers, but work zone speed limits must be observed 24 hours a day, even when workers are not present.

Information provided by the Illinois Tollway

The ramp from eastbound Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to westbound Interstate 290 on the south end of Elmhurst is scheduled to close overnight this week for pavement resurfacing.

Ramp closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, until 5 a.m.  Wednesday, Oct. 31, and from 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, until 5 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2.  The detour will route traffic east on I-88 to I-290, where drivers will be directed to exit at Mannheim Road north, then re-enter via the westbound I-290 entrance ramp.

Closure of the ramp is necessary to complete pavement resurfacing because the ramp is not wide enough to accommodate a work zone while maintaining traffic.  The work is being done during overnight hours to minimize the impact to commuter traffic.

The work is being completed as part of the $112.6 million Central Tri-State Tollway Resurfacing Project.

Work Zone Safety

A 45 mph speed limit is in effect 24 hours a day in all construction zones, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution at all times. Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.

I agree with you but I don't know if we as just citizen's can do anything to stop that practice. IRead More wish that each cyclist had to have a license, and that it was enforced by laws and police, on the bike so that people could report occurrences and have the person receive a ticket just like a person driving an auto. That would make sense.

A couple of years ago, Villa Park installed "State Law- must stop for pedestrians" signsRead More on the roadways where the Great Western and Prairie Paths cross. I saw a big increase in path users barreling across the streets with no regard for the stop signs on the path.

I was really hoping that the Elmhurst Police would sound in on this info-I do understand kids willRead More be kids, but if one of them is hurt, that adult driver will need to live with that for the rest of their life-so let's come up with a solution for both bicyclist and cars to be in harmony. I really think that a step up in enforcement in the bicycle laws would help-just like the drunk driving laws-believe me the bicycle laws are just as important.
