Quick tips to keeping children safe in the heat
No power and hot temperatures make a dangerous combination for kids.
This summer has been a scorcher. With temperatures hovering in the 90-100's and the current power outages in Elmhurst and the surrounding suburbs, it's been a challenge to stay cool. Here are a few tips on making it through the summer heat wave.
1. Drink lots of liquids. Be generous with what your child drinks. Be careful about excess juices, sodas, sweet tea and Gatorade because they have a lot of empty calories. Water is the best in terms of staying hydrated. For children under age one, consult your physician about water. Young children, especially infants, cannot drink much water because their kidneys do not metabolize water well. It's better to stick with a little extra formula or breast milk.
2. Dress lightly. Cotton clothes are the coolest. Avoid layering clothes as it traps heat. Even if your child is sick, keep clothing light.

3. Stay cool in the house. Close bedroom doors to keep out the heat. If you have a basement, spend as much time as you can in it. If you don't have a cool room in your house, go to a local library or mall, or visit someone who has air conditioning. Since our electricity is out, my children and I are heading to Yorktown Mall to cool off.
4. Avoid excessive heat and sun. Wear hats and keep your sun exposure brief. In such extreme hot weather, it's better to limit your time outdoors.

Also do not allow any children or pets to stay in an unconditioned car. Temperatures in cars soar rapidly, and can result in heat related deaths. Always make sure your children are accounted for at all times.
