Unsold Dominick's Stores Will 'Go Dark' Dec. 28, According to Company Memo

Future of Elmhurst Dominick's unknown, city manager says.

Safeway Inc. plans to close all unsold Dominick's stores Dec. 28, Crain's Chicago Business reported ThursdayCrain's cited a company memo informing employees they would be "separated" and that the closures are expected to be permanent. Any Dominick's store not sold by Dec. 28 will likely "go dark."

The Chicago Tribune reported earlier this month that Safeway wants to pull out of the Chicago market within the year. There are currently 72 Dominick's stores in the Chicago area. Only four of the stores have been sold to Jewel-Osco owner New Albertson's Inc., according to Crain's.

Elmhurst City Manager Jim Grabowski said so far, no new business has showed interested in the Elmhurst Dominick's, at Route 83 and St. Charles Road.

"We have good communication with the center's broker for when something does surface," he said Friday.

Elmhurst already is home to two Jewel-Osco locations, as well as a new Mariano's Fresh Market at North York and Industrial Drive. Elmhurst residents have plenty of opinions on what they'd like to see open in the Dominick's location.
