Six months after Elmhurst Memorial Hospital merged with Edward Hospital, the local health facility has seen a jump in patients, with 34.5 percent more newborn discharges, 7.7 percent more inpatient discharges and a 12.6 percent increase in outpatient surgeries, according to Crain's Chicago Business.
Debt-rating agencies predicted Edward's close ties to the "powerhouse multi specialty practice" DuPage Medical Group, which is based in Downers Grove, would bring more patient referrals for Elmhurst, according to Crain's. Elmhurst Hospital did not confirm this to be the case, but a hospital spokeswoman did say the merger was "going very well," according to the article.
This is all good news for Elmhurst Hospital, which saw an 8.9 percent increase in revenue during the second half of last year compared to a year earlier — a much-needed change for the hospital that has had a "heavy debt burden and poor financial performance" and struggled to fill a new 259-bed hospital building built in 2011 for $450 million, according to the article.
