Could Whole Foods Be Moving Into Elmhurst Dominick's Location?

Crain's says talks are in the works.

Whole Foods is reportedly interested in purchasing seven local Dominick's stores, including the one at 215 S. Route 83 in Elmhurst, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

Crain's said the information is unofficial, and it quoted "sources," who were quick to caution that the deals could still fall through. Elmhurst City Manager Jim Grabowski told Elmhurst Patch last month that the store's future was unknown.

The article also lists the 11 Dominick's stores being pursued by Mariano's parent company, Roundy's Inc. They include stores in Western Springs and Aurora.

Roundy's CEO Bob Mariano told Crain's the acquisition is "transformational in terms of Mariano's expansion plans," as build-out only takes 30 to 45 days.

Bob Mariano was CEO of Dominick's prior to its sale to Safeway in the late 1990s.

Jewel-Osco's parent company bought four stores in October and is considering 10 more.

I should feel sorry for you. Your life is reduced to attacking others for things that do not affect you. Do you not have better and more constructive things to do? Show me your brilliance and ideas for our community. If you do, I will have respect for you.
Jim Court December 28, 2013 at 04:21 PM
Kathy lee, Why don't you go over and knock on the door. Introduce yourself as the one who is complaining. Ask Bob the plumber to show you the stuff in the garage. He is a good tradesman and knows his stuff. I am not sure if he will take kindly to you constantly degrading him. Maybe you can't stand the black guy living there. His father is a police officer who might take offense also. The other gentlemen is a waiter/bouncer. Be careful, he seems to have a bad temper. He does like me. He also has a huge dog. The dog also likes me. Don't worry, as soon as possible I will get rid of the house. What then will you complain about? Something for sure. Remember perfect one. He who is without sin..............................................
Kathy Lee December 29, 2013 at 09:24 AM
There is no need for me to talk to the numerous renters in that house on York Rd. Besides the man who fell to his death down the stairs, I am sure they are acutely aware of the deplorable condition of the house. I think the owner of the home who takes their money and refuses to fix the property is responsible. The cardboard over the broken window must make it quite drafty in there too.
Jim Court December 29, 2013 at 01:29 PM
Have you been inside? I cannot help that someone who is intoxicated fell down the stairs. I feel bad about it. People are killed on our streets. Do we blame the streets. I am not aware of cardboard but thank you. There is plastic over the windows. The home was pretty nice when I bought it. Renters trashed it once, the city did nothing to stop it. I evicted them and cleaned up. Why are you consumed by this house? Go to church, go to school, help a neighbor, read a book. Can I drive by your house? I would like to see the condition of it. What is the address? You must be a teenager on facebook, especially the type that bully others online. What is your last name? You really need to get a life. Have you ever been a landlord? Have you ever helped the underdog? Do you care about the less fortunate. You are obviously a very narrow minded, black and white thinker who needed something or someone to hate. Why don't you drive all around Elmhurst and look at all of the houses that need repairs. You will find many. Part of me thinks you may be a hate filled lady in a condo that I know of. She lives in a 350 square foot shoebox. She pays $100.00 per month to cut her grass and shovel her sidewalk. She hates everything and everyone. I have seen trailers bigger than her place. She has a trailer court mentality. I may be wrong. Help me clarify. I would never want to accuse the wrong person for reasons I am unsure of. So, what is your address ? If perhaps you are the lady next door I somewhat understand. If this is you I admit you have done a wonderful job of improving your house. I once tried to buy the houses on both sides of me. I offered good money for both properties. The owners rejected my reasonable offers only to receive less at a later date. The original intent was to build three new homes. Then the real estate market crashed. I was not responsible for that. If you want to solve the problem why don't you buy the property. I have offered the property to both neighbors. Trust me, I do not want to be a landlord.
Jim Court December 30, 2013 at 09:16 AM
Kathy, Yesterday I visited the property. I did see the cardboard covering the one window pane by the back door that no one could possibly see unless they were next door and possibly behind the house. One of the guys left with a friend and upon returning home realized the door was locked and he had forgotten his keys. No one answered so he quietly broke the window and temporarily covered the window, which he intends to fix. Did you ever lock yourself out? Many people do. I know, I was a locksmith. Why must you report such trivial issues ? Neighbors should look out for each other. This creates a sense of community and fosters good will. Until you walk in another person shoes you should refrain from petty accusations. Maybe you lack empathy which would indicate that you are a narcissist. Me, me, me. That is all they know. Read the book, Malignant Self love. Very enlightening.

ummm to whomever hijacked this thread HELLO is Whole Foods moving into Elmhurst?
Jim Court December 31, 2013 at 08:02 PM
trader Many are rooting for a Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or a Home Center. I was hoping for Trader Joe's, with a subdivision of the store and then a Lowe's utilizing half of the old Domonick's with also Lowes taking over Kmart. Nobody in the city seems to be saying much.
Faust January 02, 2014 at 02:15 PM
Many are rooting for A Public Bathhouse, or possibly a Family Video store, like Blockbuster. I'm with Kathy though, I think people are squatting in that white trailer, and the cardboard isn't helping anyone stay warm.
Jim Court January 02, 2014 at 05:06 PM
Faust, A new screen name for the alter ego? A public bath house ? I bet you would enjoy that. In case you didn't notice Blockbuster closed. I can see you on the couch, twenty videos, your computer, and mounds of munchies. Ebert, though, you are not. White trailer? I am not aware of any but thanks to your family you may have moved out of yours. Please stay on the subject. You are turning this column into a hillbilly gossip paper. We do not need jethro in Elmhhurst.
Faust January 02, 2014 at 06:15 PM
Geesh J.C.. That's not very nice. I'll be sure to say an extra prayer tonight.
Jim Court January 02, 2014 at 08:43 PM
Some choose to prey on others. Perhaps you confused the word.
WLA January 03, 2014 at 11:14 AM
I'd love to see Whole Foods come to Elmhurst.
Faust January 03, 2014 at 11:49 AM
@wla, I think that JC has other ideas
Faust January 03, 2014 at 04:16 PM
So let's get back to the important matters at hand; the eyesore on York. I haven't seen the property at 757 York, but I have an itch to drive by it now, and determine if it’s indeed, “Elmhurst Worthy”. If it isn't, there seems to be enough support to organize a protest against it, the occupants, and anyone involved with the premises. It sounds as if the community is downright outraged, by this abomination, and it's possible, that @blow hard J.C., and even @Kathy, will rest easier, if it's determined to be unworthy. I’m a bit confused about the white trailer, but I’m hoping that if I spot it, I’ll know what all the fuss is about.
WLA January 03, 2014 at 04:38 PM
I must have commented on the wrong story, thought it was about Dominick's on St Charles and 83.
Faust January 03, 2014 at 04:44 PM
Dominick's, the white trailer, lawn ornaments, and what in Sam Hein is going on at 757
Adam January 05, 2014 at 07:14 PM
seriously, a bath house?? Do Elmhurst residents lack bathrooms?
blow hard j.c. January 06, 2014 at 01:18 PM
@faust check out the van in the drive that has not moved for over a year .
Faust January 07, 2014 at 02:51 PM
@ blow hard J.C. Van's are the Devil's Thigh. Other than being windowless, full of moisture, a breeding ground for vermin and tarantula's, and possibly a spare Sauna when it's 100 degrees out, I don't see anything good that can come from a Van in a driveway. What do you suppose is going on in that Van, that would make someone believe they should park it, store it, and display it, for the whole neighborhood to see. Has the Van ever received an unfriendly surprise, in the form of an egg caserole/dirty diaper combo underneath the window wiper?. I hope not, that would be illegal. Maybe the Van is used to transport the poor, the needy, the downtrodden. Maybe it's a church function Van, and bread is broken within its walls. All I'm saying is that you never know what a man and a van can do. Usually not good stuff, but let's give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
blow hard j.c. January 07, 2014 at 03:37 PM
maybe look at his other properties on hampshire and see what you think, who knows what was living in the tents he had in his backyard.
Faust January 07, 2014 at 03:49 PM
There are fully erected Tents in an Elmhurst Residents back yard? Sounds like there might be some harboring of humans occuring. Maybe some without gainful employment, or following the band called Phish.
Idont Givitout January 08, 2014 at 04:45 PM
People against Jim Court, it is time to take your bit. ching elsewhere. This thread is about the Dominick locations. I am sick and tired of seeing this!
Jim Court January 08, 2014 at 11:14 PM
These are people who are filled with hate, know not what they are talking about and way too much time on their hands. The world is filled with chronic malcontents; There is no reasoning with mentally ill people. I should feel sorry for them. We are only talking about a few empty souls who keep repeating themselves over and over. Envy and jealousy. Instead of hiding behind some made up name and your name calling, why don't you stop by and talk to me? Friends of mine have commented that you are a small group of unbalanced people. Karen, would you put a stop to this insanity ? Libel and slander issues are present. The loss of Domonicks leaves a huge loss for local residents.
Faust January 08, 2014 at 11:20 PM
How much $ for that handsome van?
Mark C January 09, 2014 at 01:12 AM
Idont givitout, completely agree. If anyone has a legit issue take it up with the city; they're very attentive. You reflect poorly on Elmhurst, especially on an internet forum for the World to see. Hopefully a company see's it favorably to establish their business and fill the void that the departure of Dominick's left. People need the jobs, locals need the convenience, and the city needs the revenue so lets stick to the topic. I know many people who would like to see Whole Foods move into the location.
Faust January 09, 2014 at 10:56 AM
I agree, Mr. mark court
blow hard j.c. January 09, 2014 at 11:23 AM
Well then read Jim's first comment and then see who and what he rents.
Faust January 09, 2014 at 12:48 PM
@blow hard, Is the van operable? If so, does it have a sleeping quarters in it? Does the van bring up property values? Where is the trailer? Everyone loves Whole Foods! That's a fact.
Karen Chadra (Editor) January 09, 2014 at 01:13 PM
This is the post where civility has gone to die. Please cease the not-so-veiled attacks. We've all grown weary of it. If you have a problem with Mr. Court or his properties, take it to the city.
Jim Court January 12, 2014 at 06:12 PM
The closing of the two Dominicks has resulted in a substantial increase in traffic at both Jewels. Elmhurst tends to let the market get saturated with redundant businesses resulting in poor performance by all. We need to diversify. Some companies serve niche markets such as a Trader Joe's. We really could use a home center. All of our spending for this type of business takes place outside our community. I wonder if we have the population density to support all of the hamburger, yogurt, and beauty related businesses.
