ELMHURST READS: The Civil War Author Visit from Donald McCaig

Donald McCaig, author of widely praised Civil War-era novels Jacob’s Ladder, Rhett Butler’s People, and Canaan will be visiting Elmhurst on Thursday, April 21 at 7:00pm at Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel at Elmhurst College. McCaig’s visit is a part of ELMHURST READS, the annual city-wide reading event in its third year, and commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. 


Presented by Elmhurst Public Library, the Friends of the Elmhurst Public Library and Elmhurst College, McCaig will share his experiences from researching and writing more than a half-dozen books, which will also be available to be purchased and autographed after his talk. This event is free and open to the public. 

Donald McCaig is the award-winning author of Jacob’s Ladder designated “the best civil war novel ever written” by The Virginia Quarterly. People magazine raved “Think Gone With the Wind, think Cold Mountain.” It won the Michael Sharra Award for Civil War Fiction and the Library of Virginia Award for Fiction.
