Elmhurst Art Museum Explores the Domicile in "Open House" Show

Elmhurst Art Museum’s new exhibit, the first organized by new curator Staci Boris, opens with about a dozen decorated miniature houses and continues through cut-paper kitchen collages and smorgasbord assemblages of various home goods, all representing the theme of “Open House: Art About Home,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

“They mystify any direct notion of dwelling,” Tribune reviewer Lori Waxman writes of the Don Baum miniature houses that open the exhibit. “In its place come the metaphorical possibilities of shelter — for ideas, humor, whimsy, experiment, affection — and a meditation on the difference between interior and exterior appearances.”

Also featured in the exhibit, the paper said: a documentary on homelessness “through the eyes of the home,” a series of 9,000 photos of people’s random junk items, and a set of oil paintings of “Apartment Therapy.” 

The exhibit runs through April 20 at the Elmhurst Art Museum.
