Veterans Day: Lessons Learned From Those Who Served

The somber tradition that is Veterans Day in Elmhurst begins at a morning school assembly, which is followed by a tribute at Wilder Park. It concludes with an evening concert at the American Legion.

The community is invited to take part in the annual Veterans Day ceremony at Wilder Park at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Wilder Park, 225 S. Prospect Ave.

The event, held in cooperation with the Elmhurst Park District, is organized by the Elmhurst American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary, as well as the City of Elmhurst. The somber ceremony will include the laying of wreathes at the Veterans Memorial at Wilder, a series of speeches by Elmhurst dignitaries and veterans, a moment of silence for those lost, a rifle salute and more.

Better Than a Day Off

York High School students do not have the day off on Monday. Instead, they will be visited for the third year in a row by veterans. The school will honor the communities' veterans at 8 a.m. at an assembly.

Select veterans will be asked to make a speech. In past assemblies, visitors have included Congressman Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois)

York is not the only school to welcome veterans this year. At Conrad Fischer, World War II veterans who received letters of appreciation from the students on their last honor flight to Washington, D.C., will come visit the kids at 12:30 p.m. They will talk about their experiences in World War II, and the students will share some of their thoughts on what it means to be a hero.

Musical Tribute

Also on Monday, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., the Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble will perform for veterans at the Elmhurst American Legion Hall, Spring and Butterfield roads. Admission is free.
