Dozens of families sprinted over to the Elmhurst Public Library Monday to begin their winter vacation on the right foot with the Step into a Good Book Winter Reading Program.
Kids ages 2 to 8 can record the titles of the books they read, and everyone who reaches their reading goal by Feb. 28 will be given stickers, prizes and a ticket for the chance to win a raffle prize. Watch as reading program participants names go up on the "That's Shoetastic!" bulletin board.
Ages 2 through kindergarteners can meet their goal by listening to 40 books. First- and second-graders should read 10 books, and third- through eighth-graders should read five books to meet their reading goals.

After a magic show with an amazing performance by magician Danny Orleans, there was a mad dash to the Kids' Library to sign up for the reading program. As a first-grader, Alexis Brandstatter needs to read 10 books to win prizes. So will she do it?
"I'm going to read more!" she said, adding that she especially likes fantasy books.

There are more winter events planned to help kids keep their reading caps on.
Come to a storytime for ages 4 through 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
Kids in second and third grades are invited to a discussion of the book Snowed In with Grandmother Silk by Carol Fenner from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4.
