One Morning, Many Readers

Summer Reading Kicks Off At the Library

Readers of all ages were transported to lands far away Saturday as the Elmhurst Public Library became the kick-off point for summer reading adventures.

This year's theme, “One World, Many Stories,” will keep the  international festival feeling going through programs, prizes and more all summer long.

On Saturday, young readers began their journey in the Bazaar, which is normally known as the Kids' Library. Library staff welcomed them and gave them a colorful and age-appropriate reading log along with a bookmark and a bright yellow plastic bag.

In other areas of the bazaar, juggler Mike Vondruska entertained those waiting to become a wild animal or a sparkly fairy at the face painting and henna station. In the storytime room, Puppets on the Wilder Side offered four performances.

This was a milestone year for six-year-old Sydney Vaillancourt, said her mom, as this was the first year she would be reading books on her own. Her sister, four-year-old Abby, would continue to read with mom. Both girls were summer reading veterans, though, as they participate every year.

Teens and adults are also invited to log their reading progress and try for prizes. Teens can go online to record their books and write reviews, and can  enter a raffle for an iPod Nano. After reading four books, adults can enter their logs in a raffle for around-the-world themed prizes, including a Nook eReader. Adult reading logs are available on the second floor.

A special Summer Reading Edition of the library's Fine Print newsletter offers detailed descriptions of the programs, prizes, storytimes and more scheduled for the rest of the summer.

An Elmhurst Public Library card, an Elmhurst school ID or an Elmhurst report card is needed to register for the kids program.
