Shirley Moore, a certified nurse midwife with the Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, received the Joyce Roberts Award for Excellence in Midwifery in Illinois from the American Collage of Nurse-Midwives. Moore was recognized for her long-term leadership, excellent mentoring, promotion and institution of water birth and the establishment of three distinct full scope practices, the latest one at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
"I have been practicing midwifery for 32 years and have loved every minute. It seems strange to get an award for something that already gives the gift of joy,” Moore said. “I have worked with many wonderful mothers, families, midwives and students who have aided me in my career and I thank and share this honor with all of them"
The American College of Nurse-Midwives is the professional association that represents certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives in the U.S. With roots dating to 1929, ACNM sets the standard for excellence in midwifery education and practice in the United States and strengthens the capacity of midwives in developing countries. ACNM reviews research, administers and promotes continuing education programs, and works with organizations, state and federal agencies, and members of Congress to advance the well-being of women and infants through the practice of midwifery.
“Midwives are primary care providers for women throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health,” Moore said. “I’m honored to be a midwife and support women’s choices, cultural preferences and unique needs and work with mutual understanding and respect to deliver the care all women deserve.”
