It's Worth a Trek to the City for Traditional Columbus Day Activities

Chicago traditions include Catholic Mass, laying of wreaths and the annual Columbus Day parade.

Most school districts in the area have a holiday on Monday for Columbus Day.

To make it a learning experience—and let the kids enjoy some fun too—here's information about celebrations organized by the Chicago area Italian-American community, as well as links to information about Columbus and his voyages.

The following information comes from Casa Italia, home of the Italian Cultural Center in Stone Park.

On Monday, Oct. 8, the activities begin with 9 a.m. Catholic Mass at The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, 1224 W. Lexington in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood. It will be followed by a 10 a.m. wreath laying ceremony at  the Christopher Columbus statue in Arrigo Park, Chicago (just outside the shrine). Activities are organized by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans

The parade will run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Columbus Drive between Balbo and Randolph in Chicago. A reception (reservations required) will be held at Casa Italia at 3:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per adult, children under 12 free all day and there is a cash bar for beer and wine. Call 708-450-9050 for bus and reception reservations.  (Bus transportation available between Casa Italia and downtown Chicago.) Click here to download a flyer.

I agree with you but I don't know if we as just citizen's can do anything to stop that practice. IRead More wish that each cyclist had to have a license, and that it was enforced by laws and police, on the bike so that people could report occurrences and have the person receive a ticket just like a person driving an auto. That would make sense.

A couple of years ago, Villa Park installed "State Law- must stop for pedestrians" signsRead More on the roadways where the Great Western and Prairie Paths cross. I saw a big increase in path users barreling across the streets with no regard for the stop signs on the path.

I was really hoping that the Elmhurst Police would sound in on this info-I do understand kids willRead More be kids, but if one of them is hurt, that adult driver will need to live with that for the rest of their life-so let's come up with a solution for both bicyclist and cars to be in harmony. I really think that a step up in enforcement in the bicycle laws would help-just like the drunk driving laws-believe me the bicycle laws are just as important.
