Family Circle Ranks Elmhurst ‘Ten Best U.S. Towns for Families’

Elmhurst selected for its stellar schools, affordable housing and giving spirit.

Elmhurst residents have been saying it for years, and now Family Circle magazine is helping spread the word. The August 2014 issue, on newsstands now, names Elmhurst as one of the Ten Best U.S. Towns for Families.

“It’s an honor for Elmhurst to be recognized as a terrific place to live,” Mayor Steve Morley said. “Our city provides superior services, great schools and a robust business climate.”

Family Circle worked with Onboard Informatics, a New York City research firm, to compile a list of 4,200 cities with populations between 10,000 and 150,000, and then culled those with a high concentration of households with median incomes between $50,000 and $100,000. Elmhurst has approximately 45,000 residents and a median household income of about $88,000.

The magazine then measured the towns against family-friendly criteria: affordable homes, quality schools, access to health care, green space, low crime rate and financial stability.

The article highlights Karen and Rich Stezowski of Elmhurst, who cite great schools and a pedestrian-friendly downtown as just two of the many reasons to live here.

“Elmhurst has everything a family could want,” Karen says. “This community is a dream destination.”

Other U.S. towns that made the Family Circle list include:

  • Westborough, MA

  • Camas, WA

  • Franklin, TN

  • Westfield, IN

  • Woodbury, MN

  • Boerne, TX

  • Lake Mary, FL

  • Apex, NC

  • Brecksville, OH

This marks the eighth year Family Circle has ranked the best towns for families. Visit the City of Elmhurst for more information.

I have lived my entire life in Elmhurst. I grew up on South St. In Crescent Park. Elmhurst offers great schools, friendly families, a bustling downtown with many restaurants, Metra, state of the art library, Elmhurst College, 20 minutes to downtown Chicago, dedicated police force, gorgeous tree lined streets, and beautiful parks. Elmhurst certainly deserves this honor!

I agree marygil. I just recently moved to Elmhurst. My wife and I spent a lot of time looking all over the city and suburbs and we felt Elmhurst was a great place to move to. From day one we loved our house and the city. Debby-Downer...I mean Faust, do you think crime is what people first think when they hear Elmhurst? Our police department do a very well job deterring criminals away from our city, in my opinion.

I agree with Marygil and Mark .... Elmhurst is a great place to live and a wonderful, safe community. In large part due to the reputation the Elmhurst Police has of fanatical enforcement of the law.

@mark c, I think Elmhurst is phenomenal. Top to bottom. I'm just pointing out that there was quite a police presence on York yesterday. And whatever is going on there, white vans, dandelions, and cardboard; I might want to be part of it.

A very nice honor for our community! Everyone in Elmhurst should be commended for this wonderful recognition. I travel quite a bit, and the community is pretty well-known around the Midwestern region for all of the positive reasons listed in the article. We are all so fortunate to be part of this town.
