Kindness delivered in our home town restaurant

A Christmas Eve We’ll Never Forget

Our Christmas Holidays are usually planned well in advance of the actual days.  This year, however, the plans were altered a bit.

The original plan was that our family, six daughters and their families, 35 in all, were to be together at our youngest daughter’s home on Christmas Day.  Christmas Eve was to be at our home since another daughter, who had taken over that occasion a couple of years ago, was in the midst of remodeling.  The Christmas Eve group was smaller (18) due to some of the girls and their families spending the day with their in-laws.

All was well until, a short time before Christmas Eve, I had a health concern that landed me in the hospital, briefly, and our girls decided my husband and I should not take on the work of Christmas Eve, but instead, go to a restaurant.  Although we protested, that ended up being the plan.

Christmas Eve, we went to Mass and then headed over to 100 South Chop House & Grille, in Elmhurst, for dinner.  We were warmly greeted, seated and before long we were served our delicious dinners and were celebrating like we were at home.  After two hours of conversation and laughter, we decided to continue our evening at the remodeling site of our daughter / son- in- law’s home for dessert, since their home is walking distance from the restaurant.  We asked for the bill, and when we were all set to pay, called the waiter over only to be told our bill had already been paid.   We asked who had been so unbelievably generous, and the waiter said it was a gentleman who wanted to remain anonymous.   We were all in shock!  One of our grandchildren, an eighth grader at Immaculate Conception, said that maybe the man saw us join hands, bow our heads and thank God for all the blessings we had received during the year.   Maybe / Maybe not!  But whoever he is and why he chose our family is still a mystery.  We would love to be able to thank him, so, if by any chance he reads this article, we want him to know that each one of us is very grateful for his extremely generous gift, and will pass on his good will to someone else in the near future.
