AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch Thanks Community for Book Sale Success

AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch thanks the community for their amazing support of this year’s AAUW Used Book Sale.  From donating books to purchasing them during the sale, local residents contributed to making this event a success. For over 50 years the sale has continued to thrive, this year with an estimated collection of over 18,000 books. Profits from the sale exceeded $11,000, all of which will be used to fund both national and local educational scholarships and grants.  However, the good news does not end there.

While a majority of the donated books are sold, many of the unsold books are given to local  organizations that can make use of them. This year leftover books were provided to Hines Veterans Hospital, the Yorkfield Food Pantry, SCARCE, and another local library for their fundraising sale. The remaining books were picked up by Discover Books, a not-for-profit organization that will find good homes for them.

In addition to individuals who donate and purchase books, the two Elmhurst Jewel-Osco managers, the Elmhurst Public Library, and The Courts provide vital support to the sale by allowing placement of collection bins on their sites.  The sale could not continue without their cooperation. In addition, District 205 personnel again have been supportive with the wonderful rental space at Jackson School. This is a true community venture. In every way it is a win-win project. landfill and reused, community members can clean out their bookshelves and purchase very inexpensive books, and scholarships and grants help deserving students.  AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch looks forward to providing this service to the Elmhurst area for many years to come.
