York sends swimmers to IHSA State Meet

The York Dukes qualified two individuals in three events for state and both of York's freestyle relay teams qualified to the girls swimming and diving state meet Nov. 16 -17 at Evanston High School.

York High School Girls Swim and Dive (205) finished third in the Elmhurst (York) IHSA Sectional won by Downers Grove North (290) in the 14-team meet Saturday Nov. 10. The Dukes qualified two individuals in three events for state and both of York’s freestyle relay teams qualified to the state meet Nov. 16 -17 at Evanston High School.

In all, seven York swimmers go to IHSA competition next weekend.

The first-place finisher in each event and those achieving qualifying standards move on to state.

At the sectional, Shannon Sullivan won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.01), and took second in the 100-yard freestyle (52.23) to move on to the state meet in those individual events. Paula Nolte, a freshman, took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.12) with a state cut qualifying time.

Sullivan, a senior, teamed with junior Perri Brinkmeier, sophomore Jessica Woolfe and junior Hannah Nolte to place fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (state-qualifying time of 1:39.11). Woolfe (25.04) Brinkmeier (24.99) H. Nolte (24.81) Sullivan (24.27) 1.39.11* set a York High School record.  That York relay broke the pool record for the event, but so did winner Downers Grove North along with Wheaton North as the York sectional was one of the faster of the 16 sectionals held in Illinois Saturday.

Several meet and pool records were set by the competition. Gabby Sims from Downers Grove North set three pool records on the day. 

Sullivan teamed with senior Carly Redmond, Woolfe and H. Nolte to place third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (state-qualifying time of 3:36.95). H. Nolte (53.95) Redmond (55.88) Woolfe (54.49) Sullivan (52.64) 3.36.95* set a York High School record. 

H. Nolte set a York school record at the meet breaking the 200 IM mark by posting a 2:11.20.

Sullivan’s 200-yard freestyle time also broke her own York school record set at sectional last year.

Sarah Bradley, Wheaton North, won the diving competition (362.75).

The other top York individual finishers were:

Alision Brodt – 500-yard freestyle 5:17.24 – 2nd place

Katie Sullivan – 100-yard butterfly 1:02.43 – 7th place

Woolfe – 50-yard freestyle 24.79 – 7th place

H. Nolte– 100-yard backstroke 1:00.17– 5th place
