Dental Headache Care Advances

Over the last decade, advances in information and technology have helped us to better understand the interrelationships of the body.  Headaches and migraine sufferers have long sought to know the source of these debilitating symptoms. While there are many factors involved in migraine headaches, including environmental and hormonal, the source of most remain a mystery. Multiple visits to the neurologist, mystery diagnoses, and years of pain medications did not explain 95% of the headaches that is estimated to affect 25 million Americans and cost us over $1billion in lost productivity.  Dentistry may be able to help. It is believed that 80% of these patients could be suffering from “dentomandibular sensorimotor dysfunction,” also known as “neuromuscular” as well as other related titles.  A certain group of neuromuscular (NM) dentists, following years of clinical experience, attending learning centers that are devoted to teaching the principles of NM are now offering these services in dental practice.

Dr. Ivan Valcarenghi is a leader in neuromuscular dentistry having completed training at the Las Vegasinstitute and has treated patients with dentomandibular related headaches for 15 years.  Modern technology has evolved to assist properly equipped and trained dentists to diagnose and treat these patients.  Symptoms can range from sleepless nights, nausea and stomach upset to earaches and ringing in the ears (Meniere’s).  The typical migraine patient will have smaller headaches weekly or even daily that will turn into an “aura” preceding a major headache or migraine.  Some migraine headaches are so debilitating, patients may have to remain in a dark room or closet for days before the symptoms subside and the patient emerges feeling completely helpless and exhausted.
