York Girls Tennis Brings Home Best State Finish in School History
York takes sixth place, accumulating 19 points.
The York Girls Tennis Team finished in sixth place at the Illinois High School Association State Tournament last weekend, accumulating 19 points. It was the best state finish in the school's history.
York finished behind Lyons Township (5th), Glenbrook South (4th), New Trier (3rd), Hinsdale Central (2nd) and Lake Forest (1st).
"This was a great tournament for the Dukes," Coach Tres Heimann said. "It was a team effort all the way. Every spot contributed points."
Individual singles honors go to Maria Avgerinos (9-12th place, All-State second team honors) and Annie Rivera (contributed 1 point to the Dukes at State).
Honors for doubles play go to Gabby Riek/Ellen Barry and Angela Avgerinos/Blaire Porter (25-32nd place, All-State honorable mentions).
Maria Avgerinos ended her high school career winning two of her front draw matches, including a win over Jennifer Gates from Bartlett, an eventual top-32 finisher. Maria lost to Tiffany Chen from Naperville Central in the third round of the main draw. Chen went on to beat No. 1 seed Caroline Ryba in the next round, then beat Elizabeth Zordani (fifth place finisher) in the quarter-finals, before losing in the semi-finals and in the third-place match.
Due to the rain delay on Friday, Oct. 19, only one round was played and Maria was forced to sit all day as her opponents were not caught up in the draw. On Saturday, Oct. 20, weather forced the tournament to play eight-game pro-sets to get in the appropriate amount of rounds to complete the tournament.
Maria really came to play on Saturday, winning four matches in the back draw. She lost a tough 9-7 match to eventual fifth-place finisher Elizabeth Zordani from Lake Forest.
Maria finished the tournament in 9-12th place, for All-State second team honors. She finished the season with a record 31 wins and six losses. She had a career record of 82 wins and 41 losses, playing No. 1 singles all four years at York. She will play at Syracuse University next year for Coach Luke Jensen (former French Open doubles champion). She finished with All-State honors three times, (third team in 2010, honorable mention in 2011, and second team in 2012). She had an overall record of 12 wins and five losses in the state tournament (2010-2012) and earned 18 points in those three state tournaments.
Also in singles, Annie Rivera contributed a big point by winning her first back draw match against Marion High School. Annie finished her sophomore season with a 15 wins and 14 losses. She had a very strong finish to the season and will look to build that momentum going into York's 2013 season.
In doubles, Gabby Riek/Ellen Barry had a very good tournament, contributing 5 points towards York’s score. They finished in 25-32nd place and received All-State honorable mention. They won in the first round of the main draw, then lost in the second round. They went on to win three more rounds in the back draw and finally lost to a tough New Trier doubles team.
Riek and Barry had fantastic careers with York Tennis.
“The program will miss the three senior captains (M. Avgerinos, Riek, and Barry) greatly,” coach Heimann said. “They showed great commitment and great competitiveness in their play over the four years.”
They played together in 2009 as freshmen on varsity at No. 3 doubles and had a record of 20 wins and seven losses together. They played with different partners in 2010 and 2011, and they played every match together in 2012, finishing the season with 27 wins and 15 losses.
- Riek finished her York career with a record of 105 wins and 50 losses. She finished with All-State honors three times: All-State second team in 2011 with Torrie Graham, and All-State honorable mention in 2010 (with Graham) and 2012 (with Barry). Riek had a record of 10-5 in the State Tournament (2010-2012) and earned 16 points in those three state tournaments.
- Barry finished her York career with 93 wins and 59 losses. She was a three-time state qualifier with three different partners, she earned 9 points throughout those three years and had a record of 7-5 in three state tournaments (2010-2012).
Also in doubles, Angela Avgerinos and Blaire Porter had a great tournament and had an incredible season as well. They also earned 5 points for York in the team standings, also finishing in 25-32nd place and receiving All-State honorable mention in doubles.
They won their first two rounds in the main draw with come-from-behind victories in the second set of the first match (Glenbard West), and the first set of the second match (Belleville West). They then lost to two-time defending state champion and third-place finisher Hinsdale Central. They went on to win a round in the back draw over Homewood-Flossmoor’s No. 1 doubles team in straight sets. That proved to be a huge win, as Homewood-Flossmoor finished with 18 points—one point and one place behind York. They then lost to a tough team from Edwardsville, 8-6.
They finished with a record of 25 wins and six losses together in doubles.
- Angela Avgerinos had a record of 31 wins and 12 losses in 2012, she gained great experience as she competed in her second State tournament as a sophomore, she is a very talented player and the program is very much looking forward to having her back next season.
- Blaire Porter had a record of 31 wins and 9 losses overall, she also competed in her second State tournament, she has four wins and three losses thus far in state tournaments, earning 7 points. She has improved greatly over three years and is looking to have a strong senior season when she returns in 2013.
