Driver of Crash that Killed Elmhurst Residents has Been Identified

Theory being floated that this was a suicide attempt.

UPDATE 10:30 a.m. Aug. 10: ABC7 I-Team is reporting that the man who drove his Porsche head-on into an Elmhurst family on I-88 last weekend is Naperville resident William Anthony Howe, a dentist facing DUI-drug charges and and an IRS tax lien.

"Among the scenarios police sources say are being considered is that this was no accident, but rather a suicide attempt," the ABC article states.

EARLIER: The 43-year-old driver of the Porsche that struck and killed two Elmhurst residents last weekend on Interstate 88 was reportedly throwing wads of cash out of the window of his car and swerving all over the road immediately prior to the crash.

TribLocal is reporting that an Aurora woman who was traveling eastbound on I-88 Saturday evening saw "money flying all over the road." She said drivers were pulling over onto the shoulder to grab whatever money they could, almost causing an accident.

The Porsche driver's erratic behavior continued until he used an emergency turnaround near Morton Arboretum in Lisle and headed eastbound in the westbound lanes, crashing head-on into a Toyota Corolla.

The passengers in that vehicle, Sherali Shalwani, 74, and Farzana Ali, 37, both of the 900 block of Virginia Lane in Elmhurst, were killed. The driver, also an Elmhurst resident, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The Porsche driver, a Naperville resident, remains at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. He has not been charged.
