The Original 'Halloween' Returns to the Big Screen at York Theatre—and it's Popcorn Month

Released in 1978—that's right, 1978—this classic movie will be remembered as the beginning of the slasher genre.

One of the most iconic horror films of all time will be coming to the York Theatre just in time for Halloween. John Carpenter’s original Halloween, Rated R, will be hitting the big screen at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the York, 150 N. York St.

This is a special 35th anniversary film with a bonus short that explores the movie’s impact on the horror genre, called You Can Kill the Bogeyman: 35 Years of Halloween, directed by Fangoria’s Justin Beahm.

Released in 1978, Halloween is often credited as the start of the slasher horror movie craze. The film was the first installment in what became the Halloween franchise. The plot is set in the fictional Midwestern town of Haddonfield, Ill. On Halloween in 1963, 6-year-old Michael Myers murders his older sister. Fifteen years later, he escapes from a psychiatric hospital, returns home, and stalks teenager Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends. Michael's psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Loomis, suspects Michael's intentions and follows him to Haddonfield to try to prevent him from killing again.

Regular ticket prices will apply for this special showing, but Classic Rewards members can receive a free 46-ounce popcorn during October, National Popcorn Month. For more information, click here.
