Dozens of area students and their families rode a Union Pacific train April 16 with State Rep. Chris Nybo (R-41st, Elmhurst) to learn about train safety through the legislator’s Railroad Safety Adventure.
“The Railroad Safety Adventure was a fun, hands-on experience for the children to not only learn about train safety but to ride on a real train," Nybo said. "It was great to see the kids’ excitement, and I look forward to offering more educational programs like this in Lombard, Villa Park, Elmhurst and other towns throughout the district."
Nybo hosted a Railroad Safety Adventure essay and poster contest for students of the district. The winners and their families, along with area Scout troops, were invited on the train ride from West Chicago to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union.
Nybo partnered with Union Pacific employees and UP Cares volunteers, who rode the train and talked to the students about railroad safety.
In an effort to educate the public about grade crossing and pedestrian safety, Union Pacific Railroad established the Crossing Accident Reduction Education and Safety program.
Union Pacific works to enhance public safety through various outreach channels, such as community events, media, railroad police, employee resource groups and Operation Lifesaver.
