Puppets, Sleigh Rides and Handel's 'Messiah' Make for a Festive Weekend
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Santa's back in Elmhurst again this weekend. He'll be joining a whole bunch of kids for breakfast at The Abbey and lunch at Angelo's on Saturday, Dec. 10, so be sure and pay him a visit. You can also catch a horse-drawn wagon ride at 3 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church.
Did you know the Elmhurst Art Museum has given you an early Christmas present? Admission is free the entire month of December, and there's a cool, hands-on family art program there at 11 a.m. Saturday, called Making Pictures in Reverse. Plan to get messy!
Here are a few other ideas of things to do this weekend. We couldn't list them all here, so be sure to check out our calendar for more events. And, as always, tell us what we missed in the comments.
1. PUPPETS ON THE WILDER SIDE
When/Where: 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave.
Why Go: EPL's talented puppeteers will present fun-filled stories including "The Ugly Duckling," "Santa's Reindeer" and "Many Moons." They'll also treat you to a hand-clapping, finger-snapping sing-along. This program is for kids ages 3 and up. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Pick up tickets at the Help Desk with your valid EPL card.
Cost: Free for card-holders
2. SLEIGH RIDES AND ICE SCULPTURES
When/Where: 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, on Spring Road
Why Go: Check out the beautiful decorations on businesses all along Spring Road—some will even have ice carvings out in front! The Spring Road Business Association also is providing old-fashioned sleigh rides, hot chocolate and cookies from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. And, in between his breakfast and lunch engagements, Santa will stop on by.
3. MULTI-CHURCH CHOIR PRESENTATION OF HANDEL'S 'MESSIAH'
When/Where: 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 E. Brush Hill Road, Elmhurst
Why Go: Seven local churches choirs are joining together to present Handel's "Messiah."
4. SPIRITO SINGERS PRESENT A CEREMONY OF CAROLS
When/Where: 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 142 E. Third St.
Why Go: An evening (or afternoon) of spiritual and Christmas music for all.
Cost: $20, but when we checked the web site, the performance was sold out except for a few seats on Sunday at 7 p.m.
5. ELMHURST COLLEGE WINTER CONCERT
When/Where: 3 p.m. Sunday at Hammerschmidt Chapel at Elmhurst College, 190 S. Prospect Ave.
Why Go: During the Winter Concert by the Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra, children in the audience will be invited to sit at the front of the Chapel for an up-close view of the musicians as they perform. A highlight of the concert will be a special reading of "’Twas the Night Before Christmas" by ABC Channel 7 News reporter John Garcia. The program will conclude with the Hallelujah Chorus, performed by the full choir and orchestra.
