Commuters headed to work witnessed multiple squad cars and police officers fanned out around the area of Butterfield and Spring roads Wednesday morning as police searched for a robbery suspect.

An employee of Shell, 301 W. Butterfield Road, told police that a man walked up to the counter at 5:57 a.m., looked outside, then said "open" while pointing a screwdriver at the employee in a threatening manner. The employee opened the register and the suspect reached over the counter and took all of the $1 and $5 bills, totalling about $100, police said. He then left the store and headed northbound on Spring Road toward Eldridge Park.

Police set up a perimeter and used a K-9 to track the suspect. One witness told Elmhurst Patch Wednesday that Elmhurst officers were joined by Oakbrook Terrace police in the search.

Police were unable to locate the suspect. He is described as white, about 25 years old, 6 feet tall, about 170 pounds and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.
