Letter: DiCianni Will Not Seek Appointment to County Board, Election Campaign Continues

"I believe board members should be elected by the people," DiCianni says, citing two endorsements from mayors.

Dear Voters,

I will not seek the appointment to the vacant seat on the DuPage County Board. Instead, I will continue with my campaign to be elected by the voters of District Two. With an election less than two months away, I believe any incoming board members should be elected by the people rather than be appointed.

Throughout the next several weeks, leading up to the election on March 20, I will be visiting voters and listening to them. I want voters to understand I am aware of their issues and concerns, and to know I will be their voice.

I am one of two mayors currently sitting on the DuPage County Storm Water Committee, and I have the support of many local mayors, including the mayors of Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Lombard, Villa Park, Lisle, Woodridge, and Naperville. These communities, along with Elmhurst, Downers Grove and Westmont have had major struggles due to storm water issues. My experience can help these communities improve or even resolve these issues. Our committee works alongside county board members making informed decisions to help DuPage County communities cope with water-related issues.

“We need elected officials at the county that actually understand what the issues are that affect our communities; that is why I am behind Pete DiCianni 110%.  He understands storm water, public health and safety, economic development, transportation and working regionally with intergovernmental cooperation to do more with less.  Pete will make an excellent county board member.”

—Bill Mueller, Mayor of Lombard

This young man has the energy and experience and knowledge of the issues to do this job and start the job running.  In fact, as a commissioner, he is doing much of the work already.  While others figure out what county government does, Pete will be making a difference and getting things done.  He is smart, independent, extremely passionate for seniors and families and is a proven leader.”

—Tony Ragucci, Mayor of Oakbrook Terrace

Ultimately, the voters will decide who will best represent District Two. If elected, I will use my leadership, experience and passion to work with integrity for the voters.

—Pete DiCianni

I am so moved by Pete DiCianni's selfless act to refuse his almost certain appointment to the vacant county board seat, that I will also be magnanimous. If tapped to pursue St. Peter's Throne I will not run, If after the white smoke clears and I am elected Pontiff I will not serve. Thank you Pete for your pure graciousness. You are a true gentleman.

Karen, this appears to me to be nothing more than a DiCianni campaign piece. You can write a story about his not deciding to apply for the open spot, but you don't have to print his endorsments. Will the Patch be giving equal time for the 7 other candidates to list their endorsements?

We are running all letters to the editor, even those from candidates. Questionnaires are going out to the other candidates soon and we will be covering the candidate forum coming up Feb. 12.

What electoral planet does he live on? Pete says" "With an election less than two months away, I believe any incoming board members should be elected by the people rather than be appointed." The PRIMARY is two months away, you goof. THE ELECTION is 9 months away. No representation from that district for that seat for 9 months - until "the people decide"? Of course there has to be an interim appointment. You just know you won't get it. Pension Pete should be renamed Mr. Magnanimous.

Furthermore, if you've been on the stormwater committee for 2 years already - you already have been in a position to do something, but you obviously haven't. Whatever you plan on taking credit for was probably in the works long before you got there.

I have been told by a member of the storm water commission that the Mayor's attendance is in the neighborhood of 50% at the meetings. In all fairness I do not have verification of this, but I trust the source and it must easy to verify in the public record.

Unfortunately, we see this way too much in our current society today. Let’s say just for example that holding two elected offices at once within the same jurisdiction is legal. The questions would still remain. Is it right? Is it moral? Does this constitute a conflict of interest? And who does it serve anyway?
In my view it is not right or moral. In my view it does constitute a conflict of interest. And in my view it would only serve the office holder and not the citizens of the district.
Therefore, in my humble opinion the Mayor should withdraw from this election before he does any more damage to the City of Elmhurst, the county of Du Page, and its citizens. This is not Cicero or Rosemont Mayor this is Elmhurst. You are becoming an embarrassment and you need to stop before it is too late for you. Is this the example you want our children to see.

DiCianni is becoming more and more of a joke. This is pathetic.

The Mayor and I are about the same age and we have grown up parallel to each other. We were never friends but I've known who he was for as long as I can remember. Pete is being Pete. He is just acting badly now under a much bigger spotlight.

I was at an event this evening where I spoke with a couple of County Board members. The Mayor's attendance at the storm water task force meetings is closer to 60%.
