Illinois Politicos: Paul Ryan VP Selection Could Energize Both Parties
Patch surveyed local Democrats and Republicans about the impact of Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan's selection as Mitt Romney's GOP running mate.
Illinois Democrats and Republicans both believe the selection of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) as Mitt Romney's running mate will energize their party's voters in the 2012 presidential election.
That's the general feeling gathered from the Land of Lincoln survey issued by Patch in the Chicago area. Ninety-three Republicans and 89 Democrats were surveyed, though only 14 and nine replied, respectively, by the time of publication.
About 77 percent of Republicans who responded said they believe the Ryan selection will galvanize Illinois Republicans, while 87 percent of Democratic respondents said the choice will bring together their voters against Ryan.
Read about Ryan's visit to the Iowa State Fair on Iowa City Patch.
Republicans who replied to the survey generally believed a Romney-Ryan ticket will help galvanize Republicans, particularly in our neighboring Wisconsin, but differed as to whether it would impact the Illinois vote.
"Illinois informed voters will respond to a ticket that has a budget plan to get the country back on track," one Republican said. "We need a responsible fiscally conservative approach to government in this state too."
Another GOP member, however, said, "Illinois is stuck with Obama regardless of what the Republicans do."
Read ProPublica's Guide to the Best Reporting on Paul Ryan.
Democrats have blasted Congressman Ryan for his proposed budget plan and Medicare spending. The budget plan looks to lower the national debt by targeting social programs such as Medicare, and also lowers the top tax rate paid by corporations and the wealthy, according to The Washington Post.
So could Ryan's stance on these issues be a rallying cry for Illinois Democrats in this election? Democrats surveyed said yes, while Republicans said it won't help get them elected.
We asked the Land of Lincoln participants if Illinois Democrats could win in this election if they ran against Ryan's proposals. About 92 percent of Republicans surveyed said they either "strongly" or "somewhat" disagreed that it would help Democrats. Meanwhile, 88 percent of Democrats "strongly" or "somewhat" agreed that it would help their party to run against Ryan's stance on these issues.
"How far right he is will move him away from Independents," one Democratic respondent said. Another said Ryan's selection will energize senior citizens in particular.
But Republicans in Illinois lauded Ryan as a "bold choice" and a "proven conservative," touting his knowledge of the budget and financial issues facing the country.
WHO PARTICIPATED
Patch editors throughout the Chicago suburbs enlisted local people involved with politics to take our Land of Lincoln surveys. Go to the links below to see a full roster of those involved. Want to take our next survey? Email associate regional editor Michael Sewall at michael.sewall@patch.com.

My fellow GOP members...we screwed up. Lets try again in 4 years.
Ryan and Romney want to cut Veterans Health and military pay. They want to increase corporate welfare (GE and Bank of America paid no income taxes but received BILLIONS of dollars in tax refunds.)The Ryan budget allows for an increase to most tax brackets, yet a DECREASE to higher income earners, investment income, and corporate income taxes(currently almost 2/3 of US corporations pay NO income tax yet many still receive refunds. That's over 100 BILLION dollars in tax revenue lost)
Both Romney and Ryan want to continue the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2%, and will reduce funding for social programs.Neither endorses federal job stimulus. Ryan does sit as the co-chair on the Congressional Sportsmens Caucus and is a member of the Subcommittee on Health(Ways and Means).
Neither has any military service. Yet,while praising the sacrifices of Service Members and Veterans, have put forth proposals that would erode those benefits promised to Vets and Military members.George W Bush released 17 years of tax returns.Willard "Mitt Romney released an INCOMPLETE return for 2010 and a projected return for 2011.(Romney failed to file his FBAR,Foreign Banking Activities Report. It shows where foreign accounts got the money, what it did with it,and whether there are any other foreign accounts.Romney opts to pay the fine rather than file it.)
Energize the GOP is not the term I would choose. Nauseate is.Screw Norquist,we need jobs!

The issues you raised are all Democratic sound bites. They are factually challenged and besides the point. The point is Romney and Ryan are competent and understand business. Obama only understand "social justice" and "green". Both slippery concepts. We needs jobs, and for jobs we need for our governemt to stop persecuting businesses.

Romney and Ryan understand what business wants, certainly; low wages, no taxes, no regulation etc. It doesn't follow that these things would be good for the country as a whole. Or to put it another way, business has had low wages, low taxes, low regulation since Reagan. Where's the jobs? They weren't even appearing under Bush at the height of the bubble.

Ka Ching! Know fact more than half of our nations population do not pay any taxes. You say what! ( of 3 billion plus) = ????(trillions in lost tax revenue) and as far as the big corporations go it's the Democrates kissing up for their contributions for their personal use (lobbist) they are biggest perverts when comes to this game. There are far more urgent needs to fix this economy than show me the money such as tax reform, closing down all those un-necessary military bases around the world and here in the USA. If you are so concerned about the rich and wealthiest and corporations a fair tax for all would certain elevate this problem immediately yes!..The next biggest problem is all of the people in the USA instead of pooling their efforts and go to the source(White House(Obama) of their problems and demand an immediate accounting or face the consequence(resignation) like in the real business world..They all pick their favorate and personal complaint and play the namdy pamdy game and do nothing but run around complainig to each other..Romney may not have provided his tax returns but think you have a person in the white house who personally did not and has not make any of the required criterion(official birth certificate, educational records citizenship business and personal experience, etc available as all the other predecesors did..The biggest threat to the people of the United States is their love affair with "Guns" (NRA)

I am justsick of the fact that the GOP and Norquist have resorted to such blatant li8es and deception, have stalled job stimulus bills, and have adhered to the ridiculous notion that "trickle down economics" actually works.
I am not a sheep, and I resent the fact that after 30 years of GOP voting I am expected to blindly follow the party line. By the way...next time post yout name when you make an accusation, it differentiates between a person of conviction and a mere follower of propaganda.

Geez....don't follow a party line blindly and they label you to the opposite party.Since persons won't use their names when they call me a Democrat,I'll clear the issue up right now.Past Presidents I voted for were Reagan,Bush G.H, Bush GW, (hated Cheney) and I really liked McCain but went with Obama.(Palin self destructed and McCain could have croaked!)
Recently voted Hultgren,Cross,McKenna. Was a state page as a teenager under Deuster, mother worked for Sen Percy, wife idolized Micheller.Worked on McKenna's and Murphy's GOP campaign for Governor and Lt Gov. without caring what the Kendall County GOP's preference was (I liked Andy M better) and he took the county by a substantial margin.
I endorse Cross, not sure on Hultgren,Kirk is out. Next Governor's race I will push a Republican 2%r that married a Democrat but has a history of making small donations to both sides.(Maybe he can get some cooperation!)
Why do I mix my votes? Because while I think the GOP usually has the better candidates, they occasionally throw a nitwit in to screw it all up,that's why.So when I think a member of the other party is better,I vote for that candidate. This time it won't be Romney or Ryan.To be blunt,I'm fed up with Grover Norquist and his band of terrorists dictating policy to elected GOP sheep.I'm also tired of elitists donating huge sums of money and their candidates' claiming they aren't influenced.I vote what I believe is best.
That makes me a Repub-Ocrat.Let the attacks begin...Banzai!

Russ, please put down Dreams From My Father and consider your Dreams for your own Children. Romney and Ryan are incredibly skilled, successful businessmen, EXACTLY the sort of individual needed to put the forces into play which can resurrect Obama's pathetic 1% growth economy, (now teetering on a second round of recession). America under Obama will decline even further in the face of global wage competition and an impending Greece/Spain-like fiscal calamity.
When the world's strongest economy, the USA, hits the fiscal wall, the WHOLE world will feel the effects.
Government's role IS to foster a climate of real economic growth leading to a higher standard of living for productive citizens. This is done through the fostering of private sector competition. The government should not be a pulpit to demonize successful individuals for the benefit of political parties, by spouting 1850's Class War dogma.
There is no question that self reliance, capitalism, free labor markets, and small government can free individuals to work and create wealth. Such as been America's history. Obama is creating a nation of teat suckers, via welfare expansion through all of it's glorious tentacles.
Help create an America in which our children are encouraged to work hard and prosper. Small government, free markets, sound regulation, fiscal strength. Vote Romney and Ryan.

Donna, I don't want to make light of your religious beliefs. But we saw all this stuff in action under Bush. Do you really think we need to go back to it? Your list of platitudes frames your discussion in such a way that you can say that anyone who disagrees with you is anti-capitalist, etc. Let's take "fostering of private sector competition". How does government do that? What is it doing now to impede that? Tax rates for business are low. Interest rates have never been lower. Capital is sitting on piles of un-invested money. Wage rates are flat to negative (so labor is cheap). Regulation is low. Are you saying that business needs even more before it will do anything?
And "Obama is creating a nation of teat suckers"? Can you give me an example? Has he brought back 1970's style welfare? Are you referring to Obamacare? Should we reverse it and go back to pre-existing condition exclusions? Are the millions of uninsured in the US just lazy people in your theology?
Romney, well, who knows what Romney wants to do. Ryan is a failed supply-sider that hasn't paid attention to the last thirty years of failed supply side policies. But then, Ryan was never a businessman, was he?

Donna,
I love posting first! It brings out such intellectual discussions that are not readily available on such immediate notice.I haven't read that book you referred to.I have been a bit busy researching the candidates past histories. While I am very impressed with Romney's business savvy,I am far from impressed by his ethics and his failure to adhere to a constant platform.Ryan is equally unimpressive to me as he hasn't the business experience we would want from a VP.
My personal dreams for my children is that health care will be affordable,an education will be obtainable, and that jobs will be available.Should they obtain these goals,I would expect them to pay a fair share of taxes, not support a system that demands that they blindly adhere to a dogma that has shown itself to be self destructive.(research Grover Norquist)
Regarding Romney's business experience: The amount he has in his IRA is astronomical. In fact, were you to factor the limits of contribution and look at the results, then he either is the most brilliant investor ever in the history of commerce, or he violated the rules and dumped massive amounts of unqualified lump sums...or he engaged in violations of SEC rules by contributing discounted stock shares and manipulated the shares growth...I tend to compliment him on his personal achievements but do NOT want the man running the country.I am sickened that Romney/Ryan is the best we could come up with. I want my GOP back, not Grover's (Norquist)Own Party!

Well stated Donna, I believe that russ isn't that honest with us. He says he isn't voting for the Republican ticket R and R but doesn't acknowledge the incredible miss guided or purposely chosen policies of destruction from BO. He may not be playing the game of blogging fairly, honestly and with integrity. Anyone who says they want to continue in this destruction of the U.S., it's Constitution and adopt the last 4 years as the new normal of meritocracy isn't thinking clearly or wants the government to give them a life. I don't think harboring envy and jealousy over what another has is going to deliver our country from the mess of the past 4 years. Obama is the biggest lair to ever hold the office and why would any informed person vote for him unless they also wanted socialism/communism. Like Rahm stated, “never let a crisis go to waste” The crisis has been used to bring this country to its knees by the Obama administration. The objective; to make the U.S. a socialist state. Where did all the trillions that the Fed printed the past 4 years? It feed the machine (the progressive democratic machine) and not the economy.

Yeah, we tried the "successful businessman" before. That's what got us into this mess.
"Successful businessman" Romney: Bain Capital made trillions shipping US jobs overseas.
"Successful businessman" Ryan: being born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he worked at his family's construction business, founded by his great-grandfather which was already well-established and profitable, for a a few years after college and then used family connections to get jobs as a staff member for then-Congressman Bob Kasten.

In answer to Patricks inquiry about what the government runs: GM,Student loans, health care unless we repeal the no joke "affordable care act", public education, business cycles(qe1,2,3 ...) - boom and bust, housing market - no changes in sub prime lending practices - watch-G.E will need a bail out for all the sub prime car loans they've been making. We need to restore decency in our culture. Our current president and his minions is a horrible example to our young people. The lies, deceit, envy, jealousy, calumny and detraction he allows is disgusting and in my opinions criminal.
Patrick Shannon
3:37 pm on Sunday, August 12, 2012
No, Nancy, the government does not run GM or any other private corporation. If it did, we would see government appointed management and five year plans. The government guarantees student loans issued by private companies. The affordable care act does nothing to replace private insurance companies or private health providers, nor does it create a government alternative to these. We have had public education for, what, 150 years (like every other civilized country)? What's your point? Business cycles are not created and run by the government. Sub-prime lending practices (of which the vast, vast majority were done by the private sector) are over and the main companies that were doing them went bankrupt. I don't know whether GE will need a bail out or not but I do know that it is a private company. You may be saying that the financial sector needs more financial regulation, but I suspect you are not.
As far as restoring decency is concerned (whatever that means) you will have to be more explicit.

The govt IS managing GM. GM has to get approval on all major business decisions from the federal Govt.
Also, the govt has taken over the student loans, they took that away from the banks. The banks can still give loans, but the Feds are running the program and have final say.
Socialism is more than the govt running private industry, it is also using tax dollars to pay for things that the fed govt was never empowered to pay for. Spread the wealth as Obama says. Anyone who wants socialism in this country should leave the USA for those countries that have already established socialism.

October 26, 2005: House of Representatives passed regulation reforming the GSE's. The bill passed the House 331-90 (Republicans: 209-15; Democrats: 122-74), and would have given the new regulator broad authority over setting capital requirements and limiting portfolio size. Senate Democrats picked that bill up and offered it, but the Administration opposed that legislation.
Unfortunately, the White House gave Congress and the GSE reform legislation "a one-finger salute."
* "We missed a golden opportunity that would have avoided a lot of the problems we're facing now, if we hadn't had such a firm ideological position at the White House and Treasury and the Fed," [Financial Times, 9/11/08]
You Fox lovers will believe anything. The "Bush warned us and tried to stop it" school of thought will get past someone who doesn't use their brain.
Bush had a majority in both houses of congress until January 2007. He could've passed anything he wanted to and did. If you remember, he was "the decider"
So nice try, but it was deregulation and lack of oversight that caused the economic meltdown. Bush's SEC let his Wall St. friends make 30-1 bets on mortgage debt. For those who aren't strong at math, it only takes a 3% drop in the price of real estate to bankrupt the bank with a 30-1 bet.
And the war in Iraq (based on lies they cooked up) which helped triple and quadruple the price of oil also helped crash the entire world economy.

What bothers me about this dialogue (and I use the term loosely) is that everything the right "knows" about Obama they have learned from by their party leaders and Fox News. And I blame Obama for this, too: he has let them do it. Read the actual Obamacare bill. Find out exactly what Ryan's proposals are regarding taxes, veteran benefits and Medicare. It's so clear.
As for bankruptcy and growth...you can't "save" your way out of a recession. You have to GROW your way out of it. And we have all the ingredients Romney & Ryan want to create jobs and grow businesses right now (low taxes, minimal regulation, etc). Everything is how Bush left it 4 years ago, and still not nearly enough jobs have been created.
Obama put forth a budget bill that would pay down the deficit and create jobs, and all people talk about is how he's a socialist who is starting class warfare. I think class warfare is when the top 5% of the people (and NONE of you are in that bracket) have 95% of the wealth. THAT'S class warfare. As for him being a socialist...if you are holding him responsible for high unemployment, aren't you saying you want him to be one? Which is it?
I think the right are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, and that's why they support the "scorched earth" politics of the GOP they are using to get rid of him. I sincerely hope it doesn't work and that the Dems get the Congress too so we don't have 4 more years of gridlock.

Paul Ryan is the only person in Congress serious about solving the federal governments structural deficits. He's not an idiot and knew that he would be vilified by the left and many in his own party for the radical fixes he proposed. But, he proposed it anyway. He would be happy to compromise but no one one the left has the courage to come up with a real budget that reflects their own principles. Since they won't touch entitlements -- the biggest part of the deficits and debt, any Democrat as serious and principled as Ryan would have to offer a budget that raises tax revenue by 50% now, up to about 75%(2010 Tax revenue 2.3 Trillion, 2010 Deficit 1.17 Trillion) in coming decades. Something they will never do. Ryan keeps trying to have a serious debate about the budget and the other side won't even show up.
Business are sitting on the sidelines and hoarding cash due to the uncertainty over the real impact of the ACA and taxes, and what the president would do in a 2nd term.

No, Lars, there was not a "super majority" at any time under Obama. While a simple majority will control the house, it takes a 60-40 majority in the Senate (it takes 60 votes to end a filibuster). The recount in the Minnesota Senate race (eventually won by Al Franken) left the Democrats with 59 seats. By the time Franken was seated, Ted Kennedy was on his deathbed. Senate rules require senators to be present for votes, so there was still only 59 Democratic votes. Then Scott Brown won the Massachusetts seat, keeping the Democratic majority at 59-41. Without sixty votes the filibuster has always been in play, and thus the president has never been able to just push legislation through. The ACA passed by simple majority because the rules allow for a simple majority vote when a budget item is contained in the bill, and somehow the ACA qualified as such. There is plenty to criticize the president over; making up stuff and calling it "fact" denounces anything of real value you might have to say.
Lars

@ J Skellig who said "There is plenty to criticize the president over; making up stuff and calling it "fact" denounces anything of real value you might have to say"".....well, here is to denouncing you....it is FACT..Here you go...
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/feb/05/democrats-lose-supermajority-brown-sworn/
(Part of the article)...WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Scott Brown took over the seat of the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy on Thursday, vowing to be an independent voice in a bitterly divided Senate.
Brown was sworn-in by Vice President Joe Biden Thursday at a Capitol Hill ceremony a week earlier than he originally planned, and just in time to plunge into a partisan fight over President Barack Obama’s choice of a union attorney for a top labor job.
Brown’s arrival in the Senate ends the Democrats’ supermajority and gives the GOP 41 votes they can use to block President Barack Obama’s agenda.
Now you may feign over a technicality such as "death beds" and the like...however, the FACT remains, Dems had a supermajority.....besides that, you still cannot argue they did not pass a budget....they didn't even try. Your pivot to argue on technicalities only distracts from the real issue. Obama and congress, all owned by the Democrats, did nothing budgetary...period, and FACT whether you like it or not...and Obamas budget submission this year was voted down 97-0....he didn't even get a vote from his own party.

12:51 am on Monday, August 13, 2012
C'mon Lars, you're linking to an article from the Washington Times, which is as conservative as the Washington Post is liberal. When did everything that appeared in a newspaper become a "fact"? I'm shocked, shocked, that the Times would put a Republican talking point (the so-called "supermajority") into one of their headlines.
The fact is that there was never a time where 60 Democratic senators were seated in such a way as all could vote. As I said, it was 59 until Franken was sworn in, and by that time Kennedy was physically unable to be in the chamber to vote. That is not "feigning over a technicality"; that is a clear understanding of the rules of the Senate. There had to be 60 Democratic senators present in the chamber to end a filibuster, but Kennedy was indeed on his deathbed (drat those "technicalities"), so there you go, only 59 votes. Get it? There may have been sixty Democrats in the Senate for a short while, but there was no possibility for all sixty to be present for a vote. Please enlighten me as to how that constitutes a supermajority, and please do not provide me with partisan links.
And can we stick to the discussed issue? I said nothing in my comment about the budget, so that means I am not arguing about it. I'm simply refuting your misguided belief that there was ever a supermajority. Nothing else. Save the added vitriol for someone who actually calls you out on the budget issue.
Lars

@ J Skellig...well, I do need to apologize for bringing up the budget issue to you.....I had been addressing Throckmorton's post......then you kinda "butted in" on that and I brought in the discussion I was having with Throckmorton. As far as supermajority discussion goes the Washington Times is a s responsible a paper as any. Look at the NY Times or the Washington Post...they all have their leaning's but sell themselves as responsible, and journalistic......if you call one major paper partisan you won't be able to use any papers......if they are reputable and responsible one should be able to quote them...i wasn't quoting the Daily Beast, or, The Blaze, or the Huffington Post...."wiki-answers" states the dems had a supermajority for the last two years of the Bush administration and it carried for two years into the Obama administration. As for the budget discussion, yeah,my apologies.......do you agree that 1100+ days with no budget is a little ridiculous?

I, for one, don't watch Fox News or listen to GOP leaders. I read quite a bit, and quite broadly. As for Obamacare, healthcare prices have already risen and will continue to rise, we are losing doctors (two doctors I know personally have stated if the legislation stays they have a Plan B-meaning they won't be doctors anymore). We meed to cut broadly and deeply, across the board. Our debt is increasing at the rate of $3 MILLION per MINUTE. Bush spent too much, yes. But Obama has eclipsed him 100-fold. Look around. No jobs, many people choosing to walk away from their homes, the price of good keeps increasing, people are angry! I refuse, REFUSE, to leave this staggering debt to my kids. But really, it won't get that far. Our economy will collapse long before my kids are grown and paying 75% income tax. Wake up!

The rate of medical inflation is the problem that we already had way before Obamacare. It was not created by Obamacare. Why are you implying that it was?
Christine
9:48 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012
Patrick, I'm not implying anything. I'm as clear as a spring on this lovely summer day. Liberals are generally for raising taxes to increase the size and reach of government so it can successfully tell people what to do in their own lives. Conservatives are generally for lower taxes which means a smaller government so people can direct their own lives and take care of themselves. And if you look at the chart, medical inflation has risen dramatically under Obama. No one is saying the system doesn't need some improvements, but this legislation is not helping matters. My insurance premiums have not gone down or even stayed the same. They're going UP! along with the cost of everything else, I might add. Should we now talk about how gasoline was around $1.87 a gallon when he took office, but it's now just around $4.00 a gallon. Coincidence? Look, I like green energy theoretically, but it's just not cost effective yet.
Patrick Shannon
9:52 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012
Christine, I'm not a liberal. I'm a Catholic.
Obamacare is not causing insurance prices to go up nor is it causing our current medical inflation, which is simply continuing from before. Gas prices are rising simply because of demand; China and India are buying more cars. No president can control that.
Christine
10:01 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012
Patrick, I'm related to several liberal Catholics, so you're not doing yourself any favors there. The Medicaid prescription cap is rationing, which will expand and continue to expand until it comes for you and your insurance, if you pay for any. As to gasoline, consumption is down due to price. http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2012/02/what-does-declining-gasoline-consumption-mean/
When you tax something, you get less of it. So, with higher gas prices you get people driving less. Obama's own energy secretary stated he wants to see gasoline prices at European levels (to make green energy look cheap). They pay around $10 per gallon.
Bob Loblaw
10:11 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012
You shouldn't talk about things you know nothing about. Subsidies are what keep you from paying $10 a gallon (or whatever figure you just made up, once again). But keep raging on government spending - you can't have your cake and eat it, too. The earth is fine? Get back to me in a week or ten days when you're complaining about food prices, since our entire corn-based food system hinges on a pretty delicate hydrologic balance that will only be more and more distorted as time goes on (and prices are only low under "normal" conditions because of, you guessed it, government subsidies!) It's the ultimate arrogance to divorce yourself from the natural system that is supporting you. But like I said, you'll be dead, so it will be your kids' problem.
Patrick Shannon
10:13 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012
Christine, just because I disagree with you it doesn't follow that I must be a liberal.
Unless you can show that the increase in gas prices are caused by a increase in taxes, the only other explanation is supply and demand. World gas production has not fallen, so the gas must be going somewhere.
Medicaid is rationed medical care and fewer and fewer people have been able to qualtify for it over the past decades in most states. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Obamacare. As for rationing under Obamacare, you are going to have to show me something in the legislation (which I have read, but apparently you haven't) that requires it.
I would have no trouble agreeing with you if you presented a real argument that made sense. All I see is you making correlations.

Christine, in December of 2008 gas was at about $1.87 because the price of crude oil was at $37 a barrel, but earlier that year prices spiked to $4.11 a gallon in May. That certainly wasn't President Obama's fault. I also don't believe it wad President Bush's fault either. The fact of the matter is no President has much control over the price of gas. There are too many factors involved for any one individual to have that much impact.

To build off what Patrick Shannon said about insurance premiums: Rates went up 9% in the months after the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, way before most provisions went into effect, including the requirement that insurance companies must put 80% of premiums into care, meaning that part of the success of the Affordable Care Act is that it limits insurance companies' profits (except in the states fighting it). Now, I'm not saying the insurance companies would stoop so low as to hike up their rates to get a cushion for CEO bonuses while they still could--- Oh, no, wait, I am. That's exactly what I'm saying. Plus, the move had the extra benefit of perpetuating the faulty notion that "Obamacare" would raise insurance premiums. (It's pretty genius, really). Meanwhile, we're all hurting financially, being exploited by the insurance companies, but somehow Obama is the bad guy?

Communism is the ownership of the means of production by the state. Obama has not nationalized any industries, so your accusations of Communism are nonsense. We need Obamacare because the market has failed to provide medical coverage for millions of people. (I hope that you don't think that people who are not covered are simply lazy). Your prescription increases have nothing to do with Obamacare. On the other hand, you or someone you know may have gotten a refund recently; THAT is a result of Obamacare.
We have seen the failure of Bush style neo-con supply side economics. Why would we think they'd work now?

Patrick, spoken like a true liberal. Two real-life people that I know, who are doctors, who state Obamacare will drive them out of business and you just deny that they know their industry best. Doctors are already refusing to see Medicare and Medicaid patients, and Medicaid patients in IL now have a name-brand prescription cap-they can only receive 4 prescriptions a YEAR due to IL's poor financial state (which is exascerbated by trying to pay for the implementation of Obamacare). Are you going to tell me that I don't actually know any Medicaid patients whose prescriptions are capped?
Patrick Shannon
9:41 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012
I am telling you that your doctors will not be driven out of business by Obamacare (you have not told us what about Obamacare is supposed to do that will drive them out of business). And yes, I do know the industry just as well as they do because of what I do for a living.
What does bringing in Illinois' financial state have to do with Obamacare. You have to explain that one too. Sure prescriptions are capped. That was the situation before Obamacare. Why are you implying that it comes from Obamacare?
Christine
9:51 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012
Patrick, Medicaid prescriptions were not capped at 4 per year before Obamacare. That's just an outright lie. And if you can't understand the correlation between IL's pathetic financial state and the burden Obamacare is putting on the states, we aren't going to get anywhere productive. Have a great day!

My 96-year-old grandmother is in an Alzheimer's unit. She was the frugalist person I ever knew. Never ran her air conditioning, never ate out, never went on vacation. She never graduated from high school and worked in a factory. My grandparents managed to save and invest a little. That money was gone in a few years, as the facility she's in costs $10,000 a month for people who selfpay. If she gets cancer or some other nasty disease, if it requires more than 4 namebrand prescriptions per year, they will let her die. You can't make this stuff up. It's all over the news. Joe Wilson, it's obvious from your comments that you're a racist. You probably shouldn't make sweeping generalizations about the largest religion in the word. Or shall we use the Old Testament to generalize about all Christians? I'll start: So Joshua conquered the entire region – the hill country, the Negev, the land of Goshen, the western foothills, the Jordan Valley, and the mountains and lowlands of Israel. The Israelite territory now extended all the way from Mount Halak, which leads up to Seir, to Baal-gad at the foot of Mount Hermon in the valley of Lebanon. Joshua killed all the kings of those territories, waging war for a long time to accomplish this. No one in this region made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites of Gibeon. All the others were defeated. For the LORD hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites instead of asking for peace. So they were completely and mercilessly destroyed, as the LORD had commanded Moses. (Joshua 11:16-20)

Ever notice that when some people claims that costs are increasing due to this or that...it's actually just a case of a sector's profit margin shrinking? Willard "Mitt" Romney complimented Israel on their efficient and affordable health system, pointing out that their country pays approximately 8% of their GDP towards health care,( which he stated was better than in the US) while the United States puts 18% of the GDP into health care. Romney further went on to state that the US needs to follow Israel's example....
Israel has national health care and mandated health insurance..sort of like what Romney did in Massachussettes only more efficient and less expensive.
Then again, Israel, Great Britain, Japan, Canada, and numerous other countries with national health insurance, affordable education, and state sponsored social services don't have such a generous corporate welfare program as we do. The citizens pay a comparable tax rate, maybe a tad bit higher, but their corporations and wealthiest individuals do not receive the largesse allowed by the US.
Unless you're earning in excess of 250 grand a year, their is no benefit to you to allow the Bush Tax Cuts to continue. Most people earning under 250 grand will actually get a small tax decrease by allowing the tax cut to expire. But...GOP calls that action a tax increase and argue against it. If you vote for a democrat or a republican you are wasting your vote. Because it does not matter who wins. Both sides are paid off equally by the corporate powers and the money bags. Both parties have built a system based upon a system of bribery. If you bribe them and give them enough money you'll get results from them and if you don't they could care less about you. A number of Republican governors have vowed not to participate, citing costs. It appears the tax return issue is a sore spot for those that follow the GOP blindly. The simple fact is, Willard and Ann Romney did NOT submit their completed tax returns as they failed to file the Foreign Banking Activity Report for one year, and merely submitted a proposed tax return for the other. Be that as it may, even the GOP has been pressuring them to release their tax returns.
Romney has admitted to having some past issues with the IRS, and has "satisfied his obligation" and "scheduled a compliance with" the IRS, whatever that means.I assume that if he had any problems he either paid the fine or has made arrangements to do so...or his tax advisor has done so. But....even if he's squeaky clean, why the refusal to show his returns, even at the request of his own political party? That's political suicide!
Its almost as though this is merely a dog and pony show in which we are running the winner and runner up for Best Float from the Parade of The Truly Bizarre and Detached. Then we add Ryan to that ticket. He honestly believes that using a voucher system (amount tied to COLA) to assist the elderly with their medical bills will really force the insurance industry to lower their pricing and restrictions...sort of like the TARP act he voted for and the extension and additional Bush tax cuts saved us from a recession and brought about millions of new jobs and a vitalize economy. Nice idea, but naive...then again, Ryan did have a pretty float in the Parade.

@Christine -- your story about your grandmother is blatantly false. A facility is obligated to pick up the bill for meds REGARDLESS of whether or not there is a pay source. A 90-something long-term care resident who is not receiving skilled services paid for by Medicare Part A is most likely receiving medications through the Medicare Part D benefit, so the Medicaid drug provisions do not apply. A facility is obligated to provide services to its residents regardless of paysource. When a resident fails to pay his bill, you don't get to stop feeding or medicating him. You don't get to put them out on the front step. If a doctor orders something not covered by a pay source, and the resident is without private funds to pay for it, the facility must provide it and eat the cost. It happens a lot with therapy. Medicaid residents receive rehab services with are not covered by the per diem paid by the state, so you eat the cost. Why? Because it would result in multiple F-tags (federal violations) including but not limited to failure to follow physician orders. A situation like what is described her by Christine would likely result in immediate jeopardy citations to the facility.
There are also provisions for residents who do have their meds paid for via Medicaid to get exceptions to the limits in place. False information like this is the same as "death panel" nonsense.

From the Medicare.gov website: "Long-Term Care Facility —Long Term Care pharmacies contract with Medicare drug plans to give prescription drug coverage to their residents. If you're entering, living in, or leaving a nursing home, you'll have the opportunity to choose or switch your Medicare drug plan. This allows you to get a plan that contracts with the nursing home's pharmacy."
From the IL HFS website:
The purpose of the four prescription limit is to have providers review their patients’ maintenance medications and, where possible and clinically appropriate, reduce duplication, unnecessary medications, polypharmacy, etc. There will be exceptions to the limit for drugs for which a prescription limit isn't logical. Examples are drugs such as antibiotics, which are typically not dispensed as maintenance medications, and products used in total parenteral nutrition combinations (TPN), which require multiple prescriptions to be filled for a single patient each month.

First we do not need a division by parties (Democrate/Republicans) with our current technology and progarmming we can completely eliminate all the bufoons in the white house congress, senate, house, representatives, all the committies..and all that waste of all those non-productives..This would immediately resolve our budget crisis. The white house would be the central computer where each state would send it's various situations requirements, etc. The central computer(white house) which is programed with every probability would have an immediate response, solution to resolve any issue no haggle, no compromise, no delays no meditation,no kick backs to obligations to unions or graft,by lobbyist no federral bias(Dem/Rep appointed judges) every single bit of law is programable and would resolve any legal issue based on the pure application law other than speculative assumption..I maybe a nerd but every aspect of this proposal is fesiable and applicable right now.Would'nt it be nice not to have to deal with corruption, politic, and the likes Eric

Eric - the first step to resolving any problem is to recognize we have one. That problem is the two party system - democrats and republicans. We need additional choices other than the two party dictatorship. Programmed computers is the last thing this country needs. This country needs the voters to quit sitting on their hands and vote for someone else other than a democrat or republican.

Know what I see after reading comments from all of you people..All of you are complaining about the stuff Ron Paul is complaining about...From both sides I see all of the stuff you are all talking about is exactly what Ron Paul is calling out on both sides..He knows the corruption is from both sides. The government and almost all of the politicians are scared he will get in and bring to light most of the corruption and stop the funding and misuse of money for unneeded programs. I see people complaining about the wars,money,jobs....If you take the time to actually sit down and listen to the man and what he is saying, then actually think about how his ideas would work you find your self realizing sometimes the simple answer is the answer. We as adult have complicated our selves right out of simplicity..Obama and Romney are one in the same...Why do you think people say stuff about Ron Paul's ideas? Because most only think what the media tells them to.Liberty is his message. War,NDAA,patriot act,30,000 drones in the air over America is Romney and Obamas message...Don't like the truth then now wonder you don't like Ron Paul 2012

Invent, How is ignorance spread? By the thought that each state doesn't have a vote through the electorate process. Is Illinois in BO's camp? Will that stop me from voting? Every vote we make is important. The electoral college was setup so that the most populated cites and states didn't have the ability to elect over those that live in the suburban and rural areas. It is a fair system that was clearly thought out even if you don't understand. Checks and balances as the Senate is equal for each state and Representatives that are elected through an near equal division of the general population. Since the Reps. are more sensitive to the district that elected them they also have a much shorter term. The Senate has a longer term and are not as sensitive to the voting district because it's the entire state they represent. Senators have more freedom to act and vote how they personally want to. Take a look at how Harry Reid has been lying his nose off. He was elected two years ago so he's got breathing room, 4 more years, to take that risk. Clearly you didn't major in political science, maybe you didn't have a major or a degree in anything. Maybe you don't know that the U.S. is a Democratic Republic. It's a Republic not a Democracy. If we were a democracy everything would be decided by popular vote.

The reason this wounderful inventions is not fully implement is that the major obstacles are the Unions,Auto Companies,Gas producers,Oil companies refineries and the people themselve( not good enough, design, not fast enough) they are not willing to give this invention it full chance with our inovative engineers and designers and the entrepreneur spirit we could be totally independent of oil and gas and the likes..This compressed air engine is not limited to the motor vehicle run turbines, generators and the likes.. there is even a concept perputual engine where the engine compress it's own air There such a multitude of and plethora foreseeable uses..This is the type of stimulus all of our people should be looking for and not those loser(wind turbines and electric cars)

I detest fascism (state working for the wealthy only) and I don't like the R/R ticket.
I'm not a Democrat as I don't blindly embrace socialist and communist ideals and disagree with some Obama acts.
Not Independent,(I have parties that agree and disagree with me but each seems to stick me in another group).
That leaves one possible definition.I must be a politician.Whoever writes the biggest check gets my favor for the day.Whoever pulls the strings to my party's finances writes my speeches and dictates my vote.I'll advocate for social programs but will cut them rather than allow TEMPORARY tax breaks to expire and cost the top 2% more in taxes.I'll allow multi-billion dollar corporations to pay no taxes while shipping jobs overseas, but only because they are the job creators.
I pledge to keep social security, medicaire and medicaide untouched but will not raise taxes to pay for it.I will raise taxes on most people but not to pay for social programs that would detract from my corporate welfare programs.
I'll lie,dis-inform and manipulate to put my party ahead of my constituents' needs. I'll sign a party oath and stick by it despite evidence that it's wrong.I am a politico.

There is no such thing as a Roman Catholic Democrat! What does the Roman Catholic Church say about Pro-Choice and Pro-Life? Abortion and Euthanasia, are absolutely forbidden by the Catholic Church. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 2272) “Formal Cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches a penalty of Excommunication to this crime against human life.” It continues: “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,” “by the very commission of the offense,” and section 2273 states, “The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation:” The phrase that denotes that Democrats cannot be Roman Catholic is the Formal Cooperation clause. The Democrats have in their platform a Pro Choice Plank that makes each an every Democrat responsible for each and every abortion that occurs in this country. You can't get much more Formal than to put people in power that will maintain the status quo with regard to abortion. Therefore, there cannot be any Roman Catholic Democrats as they are all excommunicated! "Latae sententiae!" There may be priests, bishops, and cardinals who will try to weasel their way out of this using a catch in Canon Law of some sort, but they too would be rebelling against the intent of the Holy Father and the Holy Spirit! Life is Sacred! All Human Life!!! From Conception to natural death!

That is why these TBTF must be held accountable. This was an evil plan... . Another Hitler plan. These communists are trying to install complete communism here in America.....In J.F.KS speech on Secret Societies he knew of this
evil plan when he said an error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.....There are no fixes for fraud. There will be no economic recovery until
the crooks who caused this mess are held accountable. TBTF was a huge mistake. The so called TBTF WERE NEVER BROKE.....JUST ON PAPER...Now, the bailouts have to stop.....THEY ARE FRAUD and ROBBERY... they have to pay US back. Or there will be no economic recovery....ever...! I think Oswego mom 2011 has a great point and I'd vote to take it another step further. Let's post the wages and benefits of all citizens public and private sector. That would be as respectable as it could be. How about the persons running for federal and state government office provide their incomes and tax returns as well. That would be a good start.

Wow. This might be the best comment thread ever. The Internet should just shut down now, because nothing can ever top this.
I'm noticing that a healthy dose of anger in a comment seems to eliminate the need for spelling and grammar. Not to mention all the capitalization, which is giving me a headache.
There are plenty of real issues to talk about, yet people waste their time and effort on really ridiculous stuff. My favorite is the "Obama is a communist/socialist." Communist? Try taking a trip to China. Socialist? Head down to Venezuela. We are neither of those two countries, and we never will be. And please, someone, just once, if you're going to talk about the Constitution being "shredded" could you please be very specific? I've read the Constitution and I would love to know what exactly is being shredded. I'm fond of almost all of the amendments and would like to know which ones are going away.
Look, I realize this can be difficult, but why doesn't everyone take a nice deep breath, count to ten (or twenty) and remember that it's great to be alive. No matter who wins the election, we still live in the greatest nation on Earth. There will always be problems, huge problems that cannot possibly be solved by one person, regardless of what letter appears in parenthesis after their name. The inability of our elected officials to work together in guiding this country is the primary reason everyone seems to hate everybody. If that doesn't change, we're doomed.

Good golly, where to start? In no particular order, I guess: Gas prices are determined by the open market, pumping more here does as much as spitting in the ocean. If you don't like that, take it up with free trade advocates. We should have been off oil decades ago; instead we subsidize an industry with record profits.
Obama is flawed, but liberals think he is as flawed as conservatives, so he must not be the radical ANYONE wants to make him out to be.
Socialism IS similar to communism, but fascism is something unlike either of those. There is NO threat of the U.S. becoming ANY of those, but by definition, we would be closer to fascism than socialism/communism. The more the government caters to big business, the more that is true, but again, that is quite far off. We are a 'representative democracy', i.e. a republic. Only if we all actually voted on EVERYTHING, each person, on EVERY bill, would we be a true democracy. This is high school government class stuff, folks. Plus, you all clearly have the interweb...and one would presume the google machine.
The biggest problem Romney will have regarding his tax returns is that there are only two reasons why a guy that has been running for president for years is so seemingly unprepared for this complaint; EITHER he does not release them and everyone speculates how bad something on them is and he gets flak over them, OR, he releases them and something HORRIBLE, if not illegal, than 'immoral' shows up that kills his candidacy.

Robert V., as I said, it might NOT be illegal. However, if you really think about it, how many people, especially wealthy people, avoid or dodge paying taxes for YEARS before they are caught? Then we read a story in the newspaper about them owing millions for back taxes...Romney might not be the most ethical, but that doesn't make him stupid, nor does it make him careless.
I once read an article about President Clinton during his scandal...they asked him why he didn't just say no comment to anything instead of lying to the country about the affair. He basically stated that he knew it was a risk to lie, but saying 'no comment' would basically be an admission. While the circumstances are different, Romney is essentially saying 'no comment' to the American people, probably because to 'lie' he would have to release phony tax returns that would be instantly repudiated by mutliple sources, including the IRS. So, with that option off the table, he can only pick from saying nothing or saying the truth. Considering HIS OWN FATHER set the standard of taxes released, Romney MUST be well aware of how bad it looks to release virtually nothing by comparison. Yet, he would rather take that PR beating than whatever it is that is in the 'Truth' he will NOT release...
This is simply pure logic, Robert V., nothing more...nobody would take the 'hit' of bad publicity if they could avoid it...remember, McCain vetted him four years ago and passed for an unknown idiot. That alone speaks volumes.

Robert ,
2009 was the year the IRS granted amnesty to citizens that had been engaging in overseas activities and avoiding taxes. Blanket amnesty...as in wipe out the criminal activity, pay your fine, and no one ever gets to know. We haven't seen any Romney return form 2009 or prior. His 2010 return is incomplete and in IRS criminal violation because he refused t file his Foreign Banking Activities Form (FBAR) and he has alre3ady been told to file it or pay a hefty fine...he's chosen to pay the fine. His 2011 return is bogus, a sham, merely a "projected" return that has NOT been submitted to the IRS. So...when you say the IRS has reviewed Romney's returns ad would have punished him for anything he did wrong, you are correct. They did find wrongful activity and they did address it...that is, they adressed the issues they were able to uncover AFTER the 2009 amnesty. But...without the FBAR it is almost impossible to decipher where a foreign account got its funds, if there are other undisclosed accounts, what the activities were, what was trail of the funds, etc.
So to say Romney was shown to be in total compliance with the IRS is incorrect. The man has only shown the public NE incomplete tax return from 2010 and a "fictional" scenario of a tax return for 2011...and that folks, is what bothers me and a lot of GOP higher-ups. That and the fact he picked that milquetoast Paul Ryan as his running mate when they were sooo diametrically opposed on major issues.
Edward Andrysiak
8:29 pm on Wednesday, August 22, 2012
Wake up people...Romney earns his money from investments...stocks, dividends and interest and other "soft" income which BY LAW is taxed at 15%. That percent of millions still comes to a hell of a lot of money. Mostly I worry that bitching about his low percent would lead to a change in the tax law which will hurt almost all seniors whose income is primarily from interest and dividends. Shut up or you will get what you wish for...and our seniors will not like or you for bringing it about.

Furthermore, Congress is the real problem; had McCain been elected, nothing more would have been done than has. The Democrats could not WAIT to take their 'turn' at the trough, and instead did very little. THEN, the GOP got in...and proceeded to purposely do nothing. Thanks folks, in the meantime, the ENTIRE population (minus 1-2% at the top, perhaps) could only watch as the economy sputtered along at the weakest recovery in our lifetime.
Okay, here come the links: http://articles.businessinsider.com/2010-08-02/markets/30059842_1_tax-cuts-tax-rates-federal-debt
http://www.ntu.org/tax-basics/history-of-federal-individual-1.html
http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/federal_deficit_chart.html
Those charts and lists will show that the much ballyhooed 'Bush Tax Cuts' not only did nothing to stimulate jobs, they contributed greatly to the much lamented federal deficit. For example, in, say, 1950, the top tax rate was 91% for everybody after the first $400ooo. Funny how those wealthy people didn't fall into the poor house. As late as 1969 the top rate was 77% over $200ooo. Then starting in 1982 it was cut to 50%, despite the country being in a deficit since 1975. Dick Cheney famously said "You know, Paul, Reagan proved that deficits don't matter. We won the mid-term elections, this is our due." (He also said years earlier, "Let us rid ourselves of the fiction that low oil prices are somehow good for the United States.") Check wikiquotes for those.

Paul Ryan is a supply-side, trickle down theorist, who believes (or at least SAYS) that cutting taxes on the 'job creators' will spur employment. Except that didn't happen. http://articles.businessinsider.com/2010-02-05/wall_street/30088805_1
This despite carte blanche from a GOP controlled Congress since 1995 until 2007, essentialy ALL of W. Bush's time. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0774721.html
They had low taxes, little regulation of industry or business, good interest rates, even not one but TWO wars, yet they could not help but lose jobs his whole last year.
Under Bush, Citigroup wrote bank policy, Enron wrote energy policy, we continued to subsidize (even now, sadly) oil companies, the airlines, and Big Farma. That resulted in real estate melting down, Enron imploding, expanded TSA, and we are still using oil-based engines that should have been replaced decades ago. The first bailout gave money to AIG, which then gave bonuses to the FOREIGN division that was responsible for the company's failure/overexposure.
As bad as those bailouts were, people then complained about less money to save the largest automaker (and near largest employer) in the world. So needed was GM (if not Chrysler) in the mix that mulitple car companies with production in America all testified on behalf of the help because of the logistical and economic nightmare it would have imposed on them and therefore all of US were the supply chain needs to be drastically cut. Also, they paid a lot back.

The president should have worked on creating more domestic jobs first, before healthcare insurance reform. Free-traders like to say that competition keeps prices down for consumers, but most Republicans are all so fond of the merger, which of course limits competition. Too many jobs went overseas and were not replaced or forced to pay a price for leaving.
Lack of regulation destroyed the housing market. We need to re-install Glass-Steagall like, yesterday.
Regulation isn't inherently bad; BAD regulation is bad. NO regulation is BAD. . TOO much regulation is bad. Proper regulation is good.
SOMEBODY should pass a budget, shouldn't they? That would be nice.
The president technically had a supermajority, but the Democrats involved were so fractuous that they couldn't have passed a bag of nuts at the ballpark, let alone a bill.
Vouchers and private 'retirement' insurance are never going to work long term...in theory they could, but people are terrible at following through with such theories.
Russ may or may not be a Democrat (or Republican). Christine may or may not have a 96yr old Grandmother being used to make a point. Ivent needs EVERYONE to just not respond to nonsense. Can we do that, people?
Campaign finance reform, public funding of races, and term limits would all clean up much of our problems; and thus will never happen.

2009 of Obama the federal BUDGET went from just under 3 trillion dollars to just over 3.5 trillion dollars, about 16% increase. 2009 budget was actually committed to under Bush and approved by the 2008 Congress,PRE-Obama.That budget had money for job stimulus programs and assistance to troubled industries(TARP,Bailouts, etc.)While it may look like Obama was Democratic spendthrift, the actual fact is there was a large expenditure earmarked to "benefit" the country and stimulate the economy, thanks to the GOP with support from some Democrats.Nice idea...if it had worked.
But...the money did NOT get put to the intended use by the sectors that received it.Loans were not made and money was not put into capital expenditures to the extent expected. In fact, much of the TARP money and other programs sat idle, earning interest and profits tax free for the recipients.
Fast forward to year 2-4 under Obama: we have a stalled economy.Job stimulus bills have been repeatedly struck down by a GOP that has adhered to a non spending and non tax raising strategy.
Factually,Obama's is now the lowest spending administration in 30 years, with the 2010 budget actually falling by almost 2%.The 2011-2012 budgets increased a bit, 2013 projects a DECREASE of 1.5%(Forbes/Marketwatch) that Romney might inherit...and still no jobs stimulus.
Obama inherited a dog and tried to potty train it,GOP held the leash. The real bad guys here are Government Sachs,Norquist, and Influence for sale, not Obama or Romney.

It seems Team Obama is more interested in green energy and gay marriage than jobs. They are more interested in their transformational agenda than the actual state of the economy and its needs. They claim green energy will boost employment but that is a pipe dream based on forced government green conversion policies which will kill more jobs in other sectors.
In fact, I think Team Obama would be happy to kill as many jobs as possible in the conventional energy sector to meet their agenda.

Tax rates were much higher in the 50s (we had a little war we needed to pay for, and a world to rebuild) BUT we also had little global competition and we were the world's factory back then. ALSO a large part of the money wasn't simply being redistributed to other taxpayers as it is today. Taking my money to build a road: The usual concept of taxes and government. Taking my money to give to someone else? Wealth redistribution. As more and more of governments expenditures come to resemble the latter, fewer and fwer of those paying the freight will do so gladly.

You know, I must have a really bad accountant. I am probably one of the 2%ers. Hell, I might even be one of those hated 1%ers who has had it so easy these past few years at tax time. So here MY facts:
2007: income = $821,000, tax paid = $253,000 (31%)
2008: income = $442,000, tax paid = $140,000 (32%)
2009: income = $416,000, tax paid = $124,000 (30%)
2010: income = $415,000, tax paid = $125,000 (30%)
2011: income = $433,000, tax paid = $133,000 (31%)
Do I consider myself fortunate? Absolutely. But I take issue with all the bandwagon drones that think that, somehow, the "rich" are getting away with something. No, those like me are paying more than many of you - both in terms of percentage AND, of course, in total terms. So get over it.
And let me tell you something else. Up until a few years ago I was happy, I dare say almost proud, to pay my annual income tax. Yes, in spite of the amounts I pay throughout the year I still end up owing a bunch at tax time. Well, not so anymore. I am sick of watching MY money get wasted by those who make their career in politics. There are far too many people that want to take away from me, and others like me, simply because we have done well. We carry our burden, and then some, and we don't owe you anything.

Michael,
Please don't be offended by my comment on your tax rates and your income for the years that you posted, but...that's peanuts. Not even close to being the level of income that the 2% fall into (unless its at the very very lowest level of that 2%). A million a year? Not bad but not good enough to get your welfare and tax advantages from offsetting losses, reaping long term capital gains, sheltering money and income under intricate accounting practices, etc. Frankly, that income, while I would love to have it, would be laughed at by people paying less percentage in taxes than a busdriver. And...you really need to get a better accountant. Those figures you cited paying based on that income are ridiculously high, unless you are voluntarily making a donation to some sort of "bail out the government" program that we don't know about. You should have had some sort of tax control plan in mind, otherwise the 2% will just declare you "To stupid for that kind of money" and screw you out of it.

"An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics"
Plutarch
It's not about being rich. I'm sure you know that you have more to live on than most....even after paying taxes. Nothing wrong with that. Some of the posters above, would have us believe that those on welfare and or low enough in income to pay little in tax are the fat cats because they don't pay their fair share. Incentives to work must include training, a livable wage and enough income to pay for goods that spur the economy. Otherwise, the rest of us end up "paying" anyway. So, it's okay with me that we pay more in taxes than those that have so much less and it's also okay with me that those with more, pay more. It's the discrepancy between what we all have left to live on that is the problem. If those on the lower end of the economic scale have enough to work, eat, live and play, it really doesn't have a negative impact those with more than enough to spare.

You can't make this stuff up:
Paul Ryan, in almost 13 years as a Wisconsin lawmaker, has managed to get only 2, that's right T-W-O of his bills passed. In 2000, he succesfully passed a bill that renamed the Post Office at 1818 Milton Ave, Janesville Wisconsin. That government building is now called the "Les Aspin Post Office Building".
The second accomplishment was the elimination of a 12.4% tax on archery equipment by changing that tax to a 39 cent tax per arrow shaft and an 11% tax on arrow related accessories (points, fletches, bow strings, stuff like that). Ryan is an avid bowhunter, so this is a good thing for him and other hunters. Not a huge feat by any means, but at least he hasn't been proven to take money from the Arrow Lobbyists.. It was intended to level the playing field for arrow makers in the US to compete better with those arrow manufacturers that had outsourced their manufacturing to overseas locations.
Ryan served almost 13 years, never ran statewide in an election, and passed only 2 bills. This is probably the safest and least controversial VP candidate in the past 100 years.
Oh crud, he wants to gut Medicaire and medicaid, social security and use vouchers for the elderly....for once I thought we had a guy that would just be quiet and let the dog out when the President isn't home.
russ harrison
4:43 pm on Tuesday, August 14, 2012
Actually...it does get better. After stating on 60 minutes that he (Ryan) would only release 2 years of his tax returns to the public, he announced today that he would release those returns only as "courtesy" and would like to see the "mandated" issue of making a candidate's tax returns public eliminated from any future campaigns...didn't he know that releasing tax returns was a voluntary gesture?

What have the Republicans done since the elected to office in November 2010? They ran on creating jobs and not adding to the deficit. They broke the promise of not passing a bill that would add to the deficit, in December 2010. So that means they must have added a lot of jobs to the economy.
russ harrison

Lou> what did who do? Ryan and Romney didn't create the Obama health care bill...well, actually, come to think of it, Romney did create the model a few years before Obama got elected, and Ryan did publicly state back then what a great idea it was and how it should be a model for the nation...so I guess Romney and Ryan should take credit for that bill, not Obama. Unless it actually does bankrupt us all...in which case, "Damn that Obama!". BUT... if it does work out as Romney claimed it would 5 years go, then Romney and Ryan should get the credit. BUT WAIT! Romney and Ryan promise to repeal "Obamacare" very first day in office. So I guess it's just a moot point after all. That sneaky Obama done stole Romney's thunder and is taking credit for it! No wonder the GOP is so ticked off! Without his model of health insurance, Romney pretty much was left with a big bag of "I got nothin'...no jobs, no tax returns, no company anymore..wanna' watch my dancing horse? I'll let Exxon keep their welfare check!"
OK....to be fair, Romney said on Sunday that he now believes that the ultra rich should pay a higher percentage in taxes and that certain loopholes should be closed. But, and this is so Fellini like and ironic, Ryan's plan would reduce Mitt's personal taxes to less than 1% ! It's like Rowan and Martin are running for President!

Willard Mitt Romney released a partial return for 2010 and failed to file some required reports (Foreign Banking Activity Report among them). He'll pay the fine for that, no problem. It'll be cheaper and would make any in depth investigation into his overseas finances almost impossible. He released an "estimated" return for 2011, again missing a few required forms, but he technically doesn't have to file those before being elected President. He has not discussed his 2009 returns, the year hat the IR%S gave amnesty to those citizens that had illegal (to avoid taxes) accounts overseas. Once President, he is prtty much immune from prosecution for the duration he remains in office.
I don't see the problem here, do you? He's done what everyone else does, and he's in a position where his wife can dictate to the "you people" that you've seen "all you people need to see" regarding their tax returns.
So what's the problem? He's not subject to the same treatment as us common folks, he's a job creator and a statesman. The rules are different for his type. "You People" need to learn that and get off his back, he knows how to be a businessman and we need that type of integrity in the White House.

There are many things that are questionable about every human on this planet when put under a microscope and spun by those for or against (Mr. Romney and President Obama included). Obviously, the majority of the people who make comments here feel strongly on one side of the aisle. My comments will be responded to, spun and I will be insulted by those who comment here behind a fictitious screen name because they probably fear that their comments may come back to haunt them if they used their real names.
I'm responding to the comments above which I personally feel strongly about that if Mr. Romney is worthy of the Presidency (in my opinion that is) that he would release the tax return information as other candidates have done. If he hides his wealth in foreign banks to avoid US taxes, that may not be illegal but for a candidate running for President of the United States that is at a minimum Un-American and in my opinion un-ethical. Now, the first person that responds to my comments with something about President Obama's background that is 100% irrelevant to Mr. Romney's actions or lack there of. You may not like the President of The United States or agree with him but this issue is 100% NOT about our President, it's about the new guy who is asking us to vote for him instead of the President. If you fail to see the difference you are blinded by yourself PERIOD!
Walt Hines

He might not be hiding anything illegal that is true but we'll never know unless he shows us. I think the bigger question is what's his tax rate. For someone who wants to be the commander-in-chief he certainly is looking the other way with our financial institutions by sending those dollars to other countries where he pays no taxes. He'd rather pay a penalty because it's cheaper for him, what does that say about his character. People see this as hiding something, even the people like me who'd be voting republican. If his church requires 10% of his income to be a member then he might want to find a new church, something free would probably suit him well. Romney has more than the people of this country to answer to, he will have to answer to God.

Lou> The IRS does know about Romney's taxes... They don't release that type of information to the public as a rule. Why would you expect a beurocracy to make public a private citizen's personal tax information? They can't do that as a rule.
Romney took advantage of the 2009 tax amnesty. Do the math, McCain passes on Romney as a VP and has stated he saw over 10 years of tax returns as part of the vetting process. That was prior to 2009's tax amnesty. The IRS has found Romney to be in violation with his 2010 tax returns for failing to file required forms, and that's a serious fine. But, if he pays it, the problem goes away and the forms are no longer an issue, easy fix for a very wealthy person.
Why isn't this making press? Well...it is. Just not on Fox or Rush's show. And, as a matter of policy and federal mandates, the IRS does not make returns public. They also do not publicize tax crimes unless they actually go to trial. If Romney paid no taxes for 10 years, it wouldn't be a surprise. In fact, he may have paid ZERO taxes and still received a refund (Exxon, GE,BoA all did). For someone to think that the IRS was required to let that data out for public knowledge is naive. The IRS are enforcers, not snitches. They most likely would NOT share that information for their own purposes, such as future persecution or pursuit of peripheral violations.
So Lou, if Romney paid no taxes for 10 years, the IRS would NOT let us know. But...if Romney did NOT FILE, that's different.
my opinion
9:13 am on Wednesday, August 15, 2012
Seriously, you don't think the Obama administration would leak this if it was true. They can leak it and not worry about prosecution because Holder and his minions in the DOJ wouldn't do a damn thing about it.
How about Romney releases his tax returns when Obama releases his college records.
russ harrison
2:57 pm on Wednesday, August 15, 2012
Why are Obama's College records so important? What's left to know? He got decent grades, smoked a bit of pot, dated women from various racial and social backgrounds, and got ripped at Spring break, all during a time period when he was not obligated to register for selective service and there wasn't a high demand for military cannon fodder. How much more American can you get than that?
Romney's tax returns on the other hand, should be released if only to dispell the notion that he did anything illegal or immoral, and in his world, tax avoidance isn't wrong...tax evasion is. But if he took advantage of the 2009 IRS Amnesty program, then the problem, if there is one, was addressed. So why won't he show us any tax returns? The 2010 returns he made public are incomplete and the 2011 returns aren't even his actual returns, they are just "guestimates".
Really, comparing Obama's college transcripts to Romney's tax returns as equally important is just plain silly. For that matter, why not demand Romney's Dartmouth student review? Or Ryans Wisconsin license for bowhunting listing his harvests? Or Bozo's documentation from Clown College?
Tax returns ARE more important than college transcripts. There are a lot of idiots with high GPA's and advanced degrees, doesn't always mean they are good at anything,,other than doing homework. Pretty much, you need to do the homework to get an "A" in any decent school...unless you bought the school a wing, in which case, Party on Garth!

"dont u think if romney didnt pay taxes for 10 years, the irs would know."
Is that a serious question, lou?
In case it is, do you not understand.....the uber- wealthy can shelter their income in ways that most working stiffs cannot. We must pay taxes on wages or "earned income", which doesn't apply in the same manner to persons who derive their income from interest, investments, stock dividends, rental revenue...referred to as "unearned income". Tax shelters are the norm for the 1%. Overseas investments shelter money further. We get our mortgage interest and real estate tax deductions, if we own a home. Most people don't have access to much more than that. It's not about not paying taxes, it's about reducing them as much as possible. That's why Romney's tax rate is so low and that's what he doesn't want to draw more attention to.

Russ

Here are 10 things the Romney campaign doesn't want you to know about Paul Ryan:
. His economic plan would cost America 1 million jobs in the first year. Ryan’s proposed budget would cripple the economy. He’d slash spending deeply, which would not only slow job growth, but shock the economy and cost 1 million of us our jobs in 2013 alone and kill more than 4 million jobs by the end of 2014.[1]
2. He’d kill Medicare. He’d replace Medicare with vouchers for retirees to purchase insurance, eliminating the guarantee of health care for seniors and putting them at the mercy of the private insurance industry. That could amount to a cost increase of more than $5,900 by 2050, leaving many seniors broke or without the health care they need. He’d also raise the age of eligibility to 67.[2]
3. He’d pickpocket the middle class to line the pockets of the rich. His tax plan is Robin Hood in reverse. He wants to cut taxes by $4.6 trillion over the next decade, but only for corporations and the rich, like giving families earning more than $1 million a year a $300,000 tax cut. And to pay for them, he’d raise taxes on middle- and lower-income households and butcher social service programs that help middle- and working-class American
Kurt Madey
9:54 pm on Sunday, August 19, 2012
Russ, do you read history? Apparently you don't. Because if you did you would see that cutting government spending doesn't ruin the economy. 2 cases in point. The depression of 1920 and the end of WWII.
Warren Harding became president in 1921. The country was in a recession and facing a depression. Largely due to the 8 years of progressive ideas Woodrow Wilson thrust on our country. Harding immediately cut federal spending by 25%. That brought on the roaring 20's.
After WWII there was a great fear of no more federal spending to produce all those planes, tanks, and other weapons would cripple the economy. Many proposals to continue to spend at the federal level were floated. But Truman stuck to sound economic principles and let the spending stop. Between 1946 and 1960 we had greatest growth period in the history of our country.
The simple message is let the market work. Jobs and wealth will be created. The government by design can only consume wealth, it can't create it.
Russ

Kurt,
Apparently you need a history review.Seems like you missed a couple of republican presidents ( Coolidge that was for smaller government) and Herbert Hoover 1923-1929 and 1929-1933. I guess having 3 republican presidents in a row starting with Harding, was so good for the U.S economy that we fell into the great depression starting in 1929 with the stock market crash. It was F.D.R. that started to get us out of the great depression by implementing 2 new deals .
Kurt Madey

Russ,
I assumed the readers here would know that Coolidge passed 2 years into his term and Harding took over.
As far as the great depression goes well there's a great book on the subject, "New Deal, Raw Deal" which outlines FDR's horrible performance as president.
True Hoover made some poor policy decisions that accelerated the market failure into a recession.
But as a matter of fact if it wasn't for FDR's programs we would have only suffered a recession (which is what it was when he took office) not a great depression.
Remember, only the U.S. suffered a great depression, the rest of the world merely suffered a recession through about 1935. Poor policy decisions here were the difference.
Russ

Kurt,
Your attempt at history revision is amusing but, probably not so funny to the people who lived through the great depression. After trying to insult me, you say the depression was in 1920, then you say it wasn't a depression but a recession.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression_in_the_United_States
I wouldn't pay a dime to read a book by some hack that would claim the great depression never happened and actually it was just a recession. If you actually read my reference you will see that the worst years of the depression where during Hoover's term (1932-33) and then came four years of rapid growth till 1937.In case you didn't notice(I wouldn't want to assume)FDR was president during those four years. According to the first paragraph in Wikipedia the great depression did spread worldwide.

7. He’d give $40 billion in subsidies to Big Oil. His budget includes oil tax breaks worth $40 billion, while cutting “billions of dollars from investments to develop alternative fuels and clean energy technologies that would serve as substitutes for oil.”[7]
8. He’s another Koch-head politician. Not surprisingly, the billionaire oil-baron Koch brothers are some of Ryan’s biggest political contributors. And their company, Koch industries, is Ryan’s biggest energy-related donor. The company’s PAC and affiliated individuals have given him $65,500 in donations.[8]
9. He opposes gay rights. Ryan has an abysmal voting record on gay rights. He’s voted to ban adoption by gay couples, against same-sex marriage, and against repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell.” He also voted against the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which President Obama signed into law in 2009.[9]
10. He thinks an “I got mine, who cares if you’re okay” philosophy is admirable. For many years, Paul Ryan devoted himself to Ayn Rand’s philosophy of selfishness as a virtue. It has shaped his entire ethic about whom he serves in public office. He even went as far as making his interns read her work.[10]

. He’s an anti-choice extremist. Ryan co-sponsored an extremist anti-choice bill, nicknamed the ‘Let Women Die Act,’ that would have allowed hospitals to deny women emergency abortion care even if their lives were at risk. And he co-sponsored another bill that would criminalize some forms of birth control, all abortions, and in vitro fertilization.[4]
5. He’d dismantle Social Security. Ironically, Ryan used the Social Security Survivors benefit to help pay for college, but he wants to take that possibility away from future generations. He agrees with Rick Perry’s view that Social Security is a “Ponzi scheme” and he supported George W. Bush’s disastrous proposal to privatize Social Security.[5]
6. He’d eliminate Pell grants for more than 1 million low-income students. His budget plan cuts the Pell Grant program by $200 billion, which could mean a loss of educational funding for 1 million low-income students.[6]

Do you really believe women need a government agency to "protect" their health?
Look up Margret Sanger. She created PP in the 1930's. I think you'll find it interesting that PP's original mission was to implement eugenics. Essentially breed out the stupid, infirm, and undesirable from society. How exactly does a woman die from not have the federal government pay for her birth control and abortions?
Social Security is by conservative estimates $100 Trillion dollars in the hole. To put that in perspective all the money in world today amounts to approximately $53 Trillion. 3 years after FDR signed SS into law we had our first recipient. After paying $24 into SS between 1935 and 1938 this woman retired at age 65. The retirement age for SS was set to 65 because that was the life expectancy at the time. This woman lived to 93. She collected over $22,000.00! And that's why SS doesn't work.
The increase in the cost of higher education has consistently out paced the increase in the cost of healthcare since 1980. To the tune of 2 to 1. You know why? Student loans and grants. The other interesting fact about education in general. Since 1980 the number of students in school has risen 8.5% (probably due to planned parenthood) but the number of teachers and other school employees has risen 150%. Huh? That really gets back to the college thing too. You see getting a teaching degree is easy. So I'm not sure that eliminating those grant and such is really a bad idea.

Hey Kurt,
here some info from Berni Sanders, about s.s. that disagrees with your right wing crap:
In the 77 years since President Franklin Roosevelt signed Social Security into law on August 14, 1935, the retirement program has been one of the nation's most successful anti-poverty programs. Before Social Security existed, about half of America's senior citizens lived in poverty. Today, less than 10 percent live in poverty.
Today, Social Security not only provides retirement security but also enables millions of people with disabilities, and widows, widowers and children to live in dignity and security.
In these highly volatile economic times, when millions of Americans lost their life savings in the 2008 Wall Street crash, it is important to remember that since its inception, through good economic times and bad, Social Security has paid every penny owed to every eligible beneficiary.
Despite Wall Street and right-wing misinformation, Social Security, which is funded by the payroll tax, does not contribute to the deficit. In fact, the Social Security Trust Fund today, according to the Social Security Administration, has a $2.7 trillion surplus and can pay 100 percent of all benefits owed to every eligible American for the next 21 years. Further, unlike the huge commissions paid out to Wall Street firms, Social Security is run with very modest administrative costs.

Was there any job growth (outside of the elimination of 3 million jobs from the U2) in the last 4 years? Was there fiscal responsibility after wasting a trillion on spoon ready jobs, and adding another 5 trillion to our national debt, not to mention the Fed money injections to banks? Was there not a credit downgrade after claims that not passing a ceiling increase would surely result in what we got anyway. Was there any plans from the current administration, outside of cutting Medicare by 700 billion, to respond to the actuaries projecting bankrupcy by 2016? Was there a budget proposal that Obama submitted that received even one vote? Did the housing market improve in the last 4 years? How about gross domestic product of 1%?

My point was to answer your question about what President Obama had to do with how this state was run before he was elected POTUS.
Since his administration is suing the state of Arizona over their immigration laws, I would say that he is trying to have a say over how that state is run.
For you to say that that the POTUS has no control over how the states are run is kinda silly. Just look at where he is from. It is well known across the country how corrupt the state of Illinois is.
How can you think that President Obama is somehow immune to the very corruption that helped him get elected first at the state level, then at the national level and finally to the highest office in the land?
Romney may not have created many jobs in Mass. but at least he is not in jail like our governors are.

TOBS, Lou did not specify a period of time. Since we are talking about the upcoming election, Obama is President and not a state senator. Do you want to bring up what Obama did or didnt do when he was 20 years old?
Come on, who are you kidding. Are you going to argue that as President Obama has control over an individual state's finances and unemployment rate. If you are going to say yes, then I pose the same question to you, that I asked Lou. Are you going to give credit to Obama for the states that are in good form financially and those that have low unemployment.
Immigration laws are generally a federal responsibility so your example is immaterial.
The only ones who believe the corruption helped Obama get elected to the Presidency are you consipracy theorists. Do you honestly believe that people elected to office do not get "help" in some format - whether it be the people they know, donors or PAC's.

Show me one state that is controlled by Obama's party that is in good form financially. My example of Arizona being sued by the Obama administration is a perfect example of Obama trying to set policy for a state.

Tired of BS - which is it? The President has influence over the finances of the state or it is the majority party of the state. You keep going back and forth on who is responsible for the finances of the state. It seems like you dont really know who is responsible.
In regards to Arizona, immigration laws are the responsibility of the federal government. Arizona was trying to side-step federal law.

What I want to know is how many commenters have gone out in the last 4 years, knocked on doors, and asked people to support local candidates for office. We're 26th in the nation when it comes to counties that levy property taxes versus the median income of it citizens. Mr. Obamacare, and Mr. Romneycare have nothing to do with your property taxes. When you think about it, there isn't that much of a difference between these "gentlemen" when you look at both their track records in office. State mandated healthcare, and weak job increases. Ryan is not as conservative as he appears, according to many conservative bloggers. Be assured, if Romney wins, you'll hear less from Ryan than you hear from Biden now. Still going with Romney, but I'll have a clothespin on my nose when I vote.
russ harrison
5:15 pm on Wednesday, August 15, 2012
I agree with Stephen. Voter apathy is especially bad here in Illinois. If you don't vote, then apathy works for the incumbent. If you do vote, then you can either change policy, or at least change politicians.
Regarding your comment about Ryan being less vocal than Biden, again I agree. Its already apparent that Romney prefers Ryan over others, probably because he can dominate a 14 year lawmaker that has only been able to get 2 bills passed, and neither was a bill of substance (named the Les Aspin Post Office and reduced taxes on archery equipment). Toss in the fact that Ryan's austerity plan will garner support but is destined to fail, and you have the perfect running mate.
The actual similarities between Obama and Romney on certain issues is remarkable. I have no doubt that had Obama NOT presented and got a national health care program, Romney would have proposed one based upon his earlier program in Massachusettes, and I am sure he was furious when the Democrats used his plan as a model. Left him no choice but to renounce it.
Obama is a fitness nut...so is Ryan. Romney need't have to bother with that sort of thing. Ryan is an avid bowhunter and outdoors advocate, so if he says a pipeline won't hurt the environment, then it gains credence. Other than that use, I truly doubt Romney or the GOP will actually enact most of Ryan's proposals. He'll probably be another Dan Quayle. They'll tape his proposals up on the fridge door and point to them with encouragement and praise.

So many people are ripping Obama saying things have gotten worse in the last 4 years. Fact is, Corporate profits are at record highs for the most part, with their taxes at a low. The stock market is hitting record highs with pullbacks, but overall, achieving returns that are almost the highest in history. So Obama, is doing great!
BUT WAIT! There is still 8% unemployment, and many Americans have seen their income drastically reduced despite the extended tax cuts to big corporations and the top 2%, or "job creators". So Obama isn't helping the majority of us common people at all. Why not?
Because the "Trickle Down Economic Theory" doesn't freaking work, that's why! So why does the GOP insist on adhering to it? Is it a case of "If Its good enough for Obama, it's good enough for us?" or is it more like..."Lets just screw it up some more until we can win the big one.what's 4 more years anyway?.." .
I'd like to know why the GOP seems more concerned with curtailing woman's private and personal decisions, pay and equal rights rather than making sure every person has access to health care and our elderly will not be left in poverty....
The time to vote as an independent is now. Straight Party voting for either side will only exacerbate a poor situation. Vote for the GROUP of candidates you believe will work together, not just the PARTY you think can win and see what happens. Especially women...you're rights and privileges are at risk from candidates in both parties.

I love these guys!R and R state that foreign relations must be solidified and damage under Obama must be corrected. Just to recap the R/R impression made on foreign allies:
Romney goes overseas, pretty much insists that he and the Israeli PM have "not just a friendship, but a dear old friendship.." To which the Israeli PM responded:" I THINK I may have met the man once...I don't recall for sure." Wow! What a great friendship!
Ryan argues for health care reform citing Great Britain's system a a program that is not effective. GB's Minister of Health responds with " We are amazed at the lack of education this man has pertaining to our health care system. His misconceptions on how our system actually works, and his inference that he is competent to compare our system to proposed health care in America indicates that he is grossly misinformed or that he is simply delusional.." Those Brits are sure polite, aren't they!
On the other side, Biden was rumored to have told Petraes "You tell that asshole if he doesn't get in line I'll personally shoot him in the balls.." a reference to some nasty disagreement on shipping NATO cargoes across borders in a land far far away...

Tonight, on NBC, Ann Romney will issue a statement regarding their taxes. SPOILER ALERT: THe interview is with Natalie Morales is already public.
Basically, She states that they will not release any taxes to the public. They have released a partial return for one year, and that's all they need to do. They are not legally required to let the public see their tax returns. The reason they will not release is "It will just give the other side more ammunition to use against us, you've seen what they've done so far..." also.."The more we release, the more we get attacked..so we will not be releasing any tax returns" Ann Romney
"Releasing tax returns as a presidential candidate is merely a tradition..it is not a legal requirement." Mitt Romney
Are these people that delusional? They have nothing to hide, but state, IN THEIR OWN WORDS, that they won't release their returns because the opposing camp will have ammunition to use against them. If there is nothing fishy, then releasing the returns would actually make the Obama camp look like fools for accusing him of hiding something..wouldn't it? Why would he give up an opportunity like that?
Mitt Romney did state that they might release their returns in April 2013, AFTER they have been elected.

I love this guy! Ryan just publicly denounced Obama again, citing the President's policy for he reason that GM closed the Janesville Wisconsin plant. Apparently, $4.00 a gallon gasoline was to blame. BUT WAIT! The plant closing was announced in April of 2008, when Bush was in office. The plant closed one year ahead of schedule citing "the workers will receive financial assistance and retraining from federal sources, due in part to the efforts of their elected officials (sic; Ryan, Doyle)"
So, on one hand, 2008 he (Ryan) demands federal funds for what amounts to a social program (insisting that those funds NOT come from the financial sector bailout funds) and later denounces these types of programs when aspiring to be VP and possibly future President.
I just do not get a warm and fuzzy about someone that lames someone for a screw up that occurred under the previous leaders watch. Not to mention that he claims to be a huge fan of the music group Rage Against the Machine but can't quote a single lyric of theirs. And, when claiming to be a fan because he so adamantly agrees with the messages the group puts out, Rage went public and stated that they would prefer Mr Ryan to listen to someone else and cease to use their music in his campaign. Here is why I will vote for Romney and why he will do a great job. For one he does not need the money so he has no personal gain to seek. As for his critics who say he sent jobs overseas and fired folks etc...you know all that apparent bad stuff. Well as ceo of troubled companies he made the decisions necessary to get them up and running or they rolled over. More were sucessfull. Remember his job then was to do just that for his investors and the company employees whose jobs he saved. He wasn't in it to creat jobs here or waste money on payroll when it didn't produce a profit. This guy knows how to cut where needed and how to make a business grow. His job as our president will be to act and make decisions for the contry. That goal has little to do with his past goals. He dam well knows were the waste is and will cut it. He will fix the tax code bucause he understands it's impact on business where the jobs are created. Simply said he is well prepared for the job. He may well be one of the best presidents we elect because he will put this COUNTRY FIRST! That, I believe, is the main reason he is running. I want the kind of President I would ask to run my business in my absense. Romney will run it well. Obama would be out golfing four days a week and glad handing while scheeming for a way to be rehired for another year. If you can't and didn't run a sucessfull business...you can't fix the mess this country is in right now.

The United States is not a business. It is not a company. The position of President is not to turn a profit for the shareholders. As president, you need to look out for all the people not just a portion of the people.
I don't know of anyone running for President that was into it for the money.
You say Romney knows where the waste is and knows what to cut. I haven't heard anything specific from Romney. All I have heard are general plans on what he may do. Plus his ideas change from week to week. He says he plans to get rid of Obamacare (a plan based on his ideas) but has yet to offer a replacement.
You feel Romney will run your business well. Do you want your business run by a guy who will leave when a better offer comes up only to come back to your business when that better offer is over. That is eaxctly what Romney did when he was running Bain. He left to organize the Olympics only to return to Bain when the Olympics were over. So much for having his priorities.

WHY I WILL NOT BE VOTING FOR MITT ROMNEY: I am so utterly disturbed by the fact that a man who calls himself "religious" and "upstanding" has done a complete 180 on almost all of his OWN views that I believe he can't be trusted in any way, shape or form. Had the Governor Romney who existed in Massachusetts been the one to show up for this election it truly would have been a site to behold! However, he instead to chose to sell out to America's millionaires for a shot at the spotlight. Obama's heath care plan is BASED OFF OF ROMNEY'S. The BOTH intend to cut $700bil from Medicare but it's what each of them is going to do with it that is the REAL key. Romney used to wave his pro-choice flag proudly just like his mother did. Now, his VP is the man who co-sponsored a national bill that would force women to complete pregnancies conceived in incest or rape or face legal punishment. Romney once believed that the funding of a campaign should be transparent to constituents and now he holds fundraisers in the Hampton's and is promised millions of dollars by Sheldon Adelson who would sell his testicles for a Republican president simply to keep his wrinkly butt out of jail. ROMNEY HAS SOLD OUT and become a puppet to the elite. He wants to talk about how he is going to help America all the while his money sits in overseas tax shelters? How American of him! I may not agree with everything President Obama does but at least he hasn't sold his soul to the Koch Brothers.

Forget your talking points and posts on multiple web sites and sit down and judge the accompolishments and character of each man...and their VP choices. You have to give it to Romney on character. Ryan vs Biden is an indication of management skills. One picks a guy who will help work on the economy and the other picks a bumbler with 28 years of doing nothing. As an aside...if I was asked who I think leaks info to the press that helps Obama, my vote would be Biden. Since I live in Cook County, I can vote that way TWICE! lol

Well put, Melother...the president is NOT perfect, but the left, especially the far left, is just as unhappy with him as the right is, just for diametrically opposing reasons...which sort of tells me he is actually very centrist...which is what I really want in a president, or most elected officals.
The GOP seems to insist on shooting themselves in the foot...and the arm, and their ear, and their...
To me, the Ryan pick only undercuts the only chance Romney had of the middle ground...yes, Ryan energizes the right wing base, but were they ever in danger of NOT voting for Romney? Republicans always come out and vote...(thus the frequent attempts at voter suppresion to keep anyone even looking like a Democrat from coming out)...but doesn't this do more to rally Democrats to come out on election day? Which theoretically hurts the GOP?
Voters are always said to lean middle conservative, but looking a little deeper it seems historically that they are more middle left if you can actually get a Democrat off their couch. Also, many demographic trends lean left, so one would think the GOP would be more willing to reach out to more groups that aren't old white Christian males, yet a pick like Romney and Ryan seems bent on cementing that ideology. None of this makes sense...there are many conservative themes that are pragmatic and reasonable and good for all...Romney can't even give details of things that have been around for decades; how can he expect to convince America of them?

Just a point about the tax returns: In 2009 the IRS offered a blanket amnesty to anyone engaging in tax evasion via overseas financial institutions. Pay the fine, and nothing will happen to you. That was 2009. Got it?
Romney has released only ONE, not two, returns. (2011 was an estimated) That single return was for 2010 and was incomplete, in that it did not have the Foreign Banking Activity Report (FBAR) filed, nor has that report yet been filed. Why is that significant?
The FBAR traces the banking activities in overseas institutions. IT leads to discovery of whether other accounts exist. If a person took advantage of the 2009 amnesty, but only for the accounts the IRS questioned, then the FBAR would lead to the pother accounts and that means jail if they were NOT disclosed in the 2009 amnesty application. So why didn't the Romney's, being such diligent and expert business people as they claim, fail to file a commonly required tax form for people like them? If they want us to believe they actually do pay their "legally required share", and sincerely believe in not paying any more in taxes than legally required, then why didn't they avoid a hefty fine by filing the legally required FBAR form in 2010? My guess it shows that Romney accepted tax evasion amnesty and has other accounts that the FBAR might lead to the discovery of...so he pays the fine and delays the outcome until immunity is granted. Oct 15th is the deadline for his 2011 returns.Lets see what happens then.

Lou...or lou (since you are clearly the the next e.e.cummings), perhaps if you could form ONE coherent sentence with full words and capital letters and such, and not look like a drunk high school kid looking for a party via text on a Saturday night, maybe somebody would take you seriously. I may not agree with TaterSalad (for example) but at least we all understand in what language he is communicating. (You can start by looking up 'homonyms'...)

After those Bain documents were recently released, Romney may have a bit of a problem. See, what Bain did was to waive certain management fees and pay their employees/owners/investors as capital gains. They justified that by claiming that the investments were "extremely risky" so they would waive the management fees. Follow?
So...when push comes to shove, they engaged in certain tax strategies that at best are "not in accordance with standard accepted accounting practices" according to the IRS. At worse its blatantly illegal. What the benefit is, instead of paying 35% in income taxes for income earned, they pay 15% or less by classifying income as capital gains. Got it?
That, Lou, is NOT paying your fair share and IS defrauding the IRS. Not that it matters, it will take a few years to decide whether to prosecute or to allow forgiveness after paying a fine. This is why so many GOP leaders and party members are angry. It splits the loyalty to the party, alienates former supporters, and leaves sheep to follow at the beck and call of the string pullers. So far Romney's only comment regarding this matter was "I was not aware that was going on, and if I need to, I'll pay the corrected amount.. " Just like he paid the fine for failing to file his FBAR (Foreign Banking Activity Report) for 2010.
We may never know what he had in those accounts, where it came from, and where it went. But..as long as the sheep get fed, he's the man for the GOP!

Can someone please tell me why Oiho (Obama's new spelling of the state) citizens continue to support and vote for Sen. Sherrod Brown-nose and Barack Obama. They have the same ideology and are driving Ohio business's to Indiana and Pennsylvania and other states. Evidently these citizens place the Democratic Party before there families and jobs! Sad..............and true! Thank you Ohio for the jobs! Keep up the good work. I like the paycheck instead of an unemployment check! Ha, ha, ha!

energize both parties? YES. i voted for obama in '08. thought it was time for a black President. he fooled me. i had no idea HE had no idea what America is, or job creation is, or business is, or the economy is, or deficit spending is, or lying is, or socialism is, or honesty is, or humility is, or racism is, or otimism is, or being a leader of the free-world is, or what "pork" is, or speaking intelligently contemporaneously (ie. not from a teleprompter) from the heart is, or how to put a competent administration together, or knows how to take responsibility for his own policies and actions, or ILLEGAL imigration is, or change is.
i do know it is obivious he knows what status quo is. status quo is what happens if i vote for him and he gets re-elected.

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney can not even agree with each other on subjects. Now Mitt Romney has himself and Paul Ryan to go against.....while Obama sits back and tries to let the U.N. small arms treaty pass...Making a world wide gun registration database.
PEACE & LIBERTY will only come if Ron Paul was President,From President to President history proves that the preachings have all been the same war for peace, war for Oil in disguise of peace, world policing, and through time we ask ourselves what is going on? what is this world coming to? Why do the leaders we elect seem to go against every belief a human being has? Because we have been electing the same demeanor of people into office, the whole demeanor of the 2 political parties is corruption pays, lobbiest pay, companies pay,oil pays, war pays all to the corporations all of these members of these 2 parties have interests in. Ron pau does not care if you built a company on the platform that it was going to screw as many people as it can,if you collect as much money as you can from people and you spend your money unwisely and you get busted or have to shut down it is your own fault.....Romney said 47% of Americans do not matter to him.100% don't matter to Obama.....Everyone matters to Ron Paul....

Good post Paul is on target on the Empire and pentagon which goes broke in every Senate Def appropriation bill the best one came from the guy who was building the bridge to nowhere and said it in this way.
what I disagree with Paul and TWIT is the freedom to pollute the Gulf OF MEX or Lake Michigan and freedom to have a dozen tax shelters and 3 mansions with car elevators and paying or pay the same rate as the dancing horse trainer BECAUSE U BOTH ARE freedom lovers he is the typical NEO wavin the flag and depriving the returning Vet's their health care and a job, while u both agree that freedom to keep the air poisoned and freedom to forgive your doctor if he operates on the wrong limb or person.in other words what Paul and the Tparty agree on is it is OK to poison clean air water and any reg that is consumer friendly is anti freedom,
