IC Dance Team is providing a fun opportunity and teaching their routines to area girls with disabilities.
The following information was provided by Immaculate Conception High School.
The Immaculate Conception High School Lady Knights Dance Program took the field at halftime of last Saturday’s football game (Oct. 20) in Elmhurst with some additional members added to their roster, the new IC Sparklers Dance Team. This new team is made up of current members of the IC Lady Knights Dance team and some young women from the area with disabilities.
The six new dancers that make up the IC Sparklers range in age from 13 to 18 and come from schools in the surrounding area. The current IC Dance Team will be leading practices, teaching small routines and performing with the new girls at least two more times throughout the year.
“This will be a very rewarding experience for all of our IC students and it is amazing to see what we can offer to these aspiring dancers,” explained IC High School Head Dance Coach Elyse Van Camp. “These incredible young ladies would most likely not have the opportunity to be a part of a team or dance ever in their lives, so just knowing that we can help make it happen is a great feeling for all of us.”
Inspired by the Sparkle Effect Program, the Lady Knights Dance team decided that this was a perfect way for them to give back to the community and reach out to those in need.
The Sparkle Effect is an innovative student-run program that empowers teens nationwide to include students with disabilities in school-based cheerleading and dance programs. Sparkle Effect teams are truly inclusive and typically combine developing students and students with disabilities to practice and perform as one team at school sporting events.
