U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley Appointed to Committee That Approves Federal Spending Levels

U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-5) on Jan. 4 was appointed by the Democratic Caucus to the House Committee on Appropriations, which is responsible for approving the federal government’s annual spending levels for nearly all federal programs. Quigley will be the only member from Illinois to serve on the committee in the 113th Congress.
“This new role is an incredible opportunity to advocate for important projects that encourage economic development in the Chicago area,” Quigley said. “As the Appropriations Committee focuses on deficit reduction, creating American jobs and strengthening our economy, I am humbled to have the privilege of ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly.”
Since arriving to Congress in 2009, Quigley has taken on several leadership roles, most recently being elected Regional Whip by colleagues in the Democratic Caucus. He is the Ranking Member for the Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s Subcommittee on TARP, Financial Services, and Bailouts of Public and Private Programs and also serves on the House Judiciary Committee.
Guided by principles of the Simpson-Bowles budget alternative, Quigley said he has led a push for a 3B Budget Plan: bipartisan, achieves big deficit reduction and balances spending cuts with tax reform. He is the author of Reinventing Government: The Federal Budget, which offers 60 recommendations to save $2 trillion over the next 10 years, and co-founder of the Transparency Caucus, which seeks to enact legislation that will bring openness and accessibility to the federal government.
