Elmhurst Skaters Put Their Talents to Good Use

Skate for a Cause will be held June 4.

The fourth annual Skate for a Cause, an ice skating benefit to help raise money for the Annie Ryan Fun Run’s beneficiary, the Midwest Children's Brain Tumor Center at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, is scheduled for June 4. The founders of the event are Elmhurst residents Morgan and Brielle Maher.

Morgan, a  University of Illinos freshman  and York High School graduate, is a member of her college's  Synchronized Skating Senior Division team. Morgan received the 2010  Cathy Clarry Memorial Merit Award from the Skokie Valley Figure Skating Club, which is granted to skaters who use their hobby and talent to help others.

Brielle, a York High School senior, is a part of the Starlights Synchronized Skating Senior Team. The senior division is the highest level of synchronized skating. In January, Brielle represented the United States at the Mozart Cup, an international competition in Salzburg, Austria. Brielle is the first York student to have accomplished this level of synchronized skating while still in high school.

The award is presented to the Top 10 figure skaters in the country who have achieved a level of excellence in their sport and balanced this success with an ability to volunteer and contribute within their communities.

Skate for a Cause will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at The Edge Arena, 735 Jefferson St., Bensenville. The band C-FACTOR  will play again this year. Registration is $20, due May 15 ($25 at the door, if space is available).
