Elmhurst’s first farmers market of this summer drew a crowd of shoppers from the 7 a.m. opening today through at least mid-morning.

“From what the farmers tell me, it’s pretty busy,” said Adam Krzemkowski, appointed by the York and Vallette Business Association to run the event along with Todd Benson.

“It’s perfect weather,” said Krzemkowski from the Southtown Hot Dogs that he owns and is just west of the parking lot - on Vallette, east of York Road - where the farmers market is taking place.

Brent Boskelly of Elmhurst Olive Oil, which has a store at 152 N. York Road, was attending his first farmers marker. He was offering green olives stuffed with feta or bleu cheese; olive oil and other items.

Beverly Hammond came up from Ludwig Farm Creamery in Fithian, near Champaign, and was selling raw-milk cheeses.

A veteran of farmers markets is Bryan Nagate, who  was representing The Pickle Guy, based in Lisle. The business has been around for almost 10 years and goes to 15 farmers markets each year. He has not been working for them that entire time. He sold pickles, relish, giardiniera, olives and other foods.

The 21 vendors represented Wednesday ranged from traditional fruit and vegetable sellers – such as Nichols Farm and Orchard, Froelich’s Finest and Berry’s Berries – to Tail Gate dog daycare, grooming and boarding;  The Art Box, selling pieces for the wall ; and Uniquely Dyed, with tie-dye clothes.

Absent Wednesday were Twin gardens Farm which will come the second or third week of the farmers market, and one other, according to Krzemkowski.

The market will operate from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays until Oct. 31.

The market will close during inclement weather.

Vallette Street is one block north of Crescent Avenue and about four blocks south of St. Charles Road.
