Elmhurst Police Report a 'Send Money' Scam and Disturbing Messages
Man told police he receives death threats from churches, so he threatens them back.
Suspicious Circumstances
An elderly Elmhurst woman received a phone call from an unknown man telling her he was her grandson and needed cash immediately because he had been in an accident and was in the hospital. She knew the phone call was a scam because he did not know what she called her grandson. The incident was reported at 9:26 a.m. July 3.
A receptionist at Lexington HealthCare, 420 W. Butterfield Road, told police a man called seven to 10 times at around 7:30 a.m. July 16 and made obscene comments, including "My private parts are under water."
A woman told police she was parked in a lot on the 400 block of West Butterfield at 5:40 a.m. July 14 when a gray Ford truck pulled in, circled the lot, then pulled so close to her into a parking space that she couldn't get out of her car. She said he glared at her as she backed out to find another space. At one point he got out of his truck to look around and was wearing only boxer shorts. The woman said she had seen the same man on several other occasions.
Harassment
At 5:43 p.m. July 13, a man left a threatening voicemail message at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 345 S. Kenilworth. The man said he would shoot a person in the mouth but did not mention any names. The victim said another threatening voicemail had been left on April 26. The voice matched that heard on another, non-threatening message, so police made contact with the suspect. He told police he didn't mean to leave threatening voicemails but he receives many death threats from churches on his cell phone, so he calls them back to returns the threats. Police said he seemed to be suffering from a mental disorder. He was told not to have any further contact with the church.
An active Maniac Latin Disciple gang member has been "slandering" his ex-girlfriend by posting derogatory information about her on Facebook, police said. The victim also said he is telling people he is going to harm her. Police advised him on July 12 not to have any further contact with her.

Regarding the elderly woman who was a victim of the phone scam...I have 2 friends whose elderly mothers were victimized the exact same way; the caller claims to be a grandson ( these low-life scam artists have ways to find out family members' names, whether they're out of town m etc,) In one of the cases, the woman's daughter and son- in- law were out of town and the scammer said, 'Grandma, I don't want to bother Mom and Dad on their trip, so if you could just send me the money,.' This sweet lady really believed she was speaking with her grandson and wired the money. The other friend's mother fell for the scam, too, unfortunately. Shame on these scammers! Can't get much lower than taking advantage of the elderly.

So true. I also know someone who lost more than $7,000 in one of these scams. It's disgusting.
