York Senior Gets Creative with Three Mystery Ingredients

Ryan Bowman's Kickin' Korean Sliders recipe earns him a trip to Round 2 of cooking contest.

York High School senior Ryan Bowman likes to cook. In fact, he likes to cook so much that he entered the Cooks Challenge for high school students at Chicago's Kendall College.

Contestants are required to incorporate three "mystery basket ingredients" into a unique and delicious dish. Bowman turned those ingredients—pork tenderloin, green beans and kimchi (spicy, pickled Korean vegetable)—into "Kickin' Korean Sliders."

He submitted his original recipe, photo and explanation of why he chose his dish, and the judges liked it so much that he's made it to Round 2 of the competition.

For Round 2, the mystery ingredients are salmon, poblano chilies and quinoa.

So far, Ryan has won a professional knife set. He is eligible to win attendance at a week-long cooking camp at Kendall College this summer, an appearance on a future online episode of Kendall Cooks with Chef Koetke and a personalized chef's coat.

Ryan is enrolled in York's Food and Restaurant Management 2 class, taught by Family and Consumer Science Department Chairman Wendy Albert.
