Elmhurst Animal Care Center Participates in Free Spay and Neutering Program for Pit Bulls
Pit bull owners can get vouchers for the free surgery, which is expected to reduce overpopulation of the breed as well as the number of pit bulls that end up in shelters, according to the Humane Society.
Elmhurst Animal Care Center is participating in a program launched by the Hinsdale Humane Society to help reduce the number of pit bulls that end up in animal shelters.
Throughout February, which is Spay and Neuter Month, the Humane Society will focus on the plight of pit bulls.
"We want to assist responsible pet owners in our community," said Jennifer Vlazny, HHS operations manager. "Spaying and neutering are paramount to helping resolve the pit bull overpopulation crisis and reducing the number of pit bulls we see in animal shelters in the future."
HHS is currently offering vouchers to pit bull owners to have their pets spayed or neutered for free. The vouchers will be distributed at the shelter, which is located at 22 N. Elm St. in Hinsdale, on a first-come, first-served basis. The shelter is open from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Participating veterinary clinics include Elmhurst Animal Care Center, 850 S. Riverside Drive. Other participating facilities are:
- Merrick Animal Hospital, Brookfield
- Glen Ellyn Animal Hospital, Glen Ellyn
- Wheaton Animal Hospital, Glen Ellyn
- Hill-Chester Hospital for Animals, Hillside
- Hinsdale Animal Hospital, Hinsdale
- Green Paws Veterinary Clinic, LaGrange
- Naperville Animal Hospital, Naperville
- Alvi Animal Hospital, Summit
- Summit Animal Hospital, Summit
Pet owners will be responsible for scheduling the appointment to have the surgery performed during February, March or April.
Pet owners also are encouraged to purchase Spay Day hearts for donation to the HHS Spay and Neuter Fund. Each heart purchased will help enable HHS to offer additional vouchers to pit bull owners.

Please help spread the word that owners of pit bulls can have their pit bull spayed/neutered at no charge at the participating veterinarian's offices! This is a wonderful step in the right direction to start to eliminate all the pit bulls in shelters! They need our help. Kudos to the animal hospitals in this program; every little bit helps in the overpopulation of dogs and cats in animal shelters.
