Actually, the specific question to be asked of voters in Elmhurst, although related, would not be the same as that asked of voters at the County level. The referendum in Elmhurst would be about putting an ordinance on the books prohibiting Elmhurst elected officials from holding more than one elective office at a time.

If an individual holds two positions, does that mean when this person eventually retires, will he/she get two pensions?

From what I have heard by signing up for the pension while being a mayor that those years will be counted towards being vested as a county board member or state rep. So the fairly meager pension one would see as a mayor gets multiplied by the higher compensation as a county board member. You can start to see how our pension system gets so messed up when what would have been a small liability from being a mayor multiplies into a much larger liability.

One job at a time - leave a second job for someone else

That should go for appointed seats too. Our soon-to-be ex state senator Ron Sandack was mayor of Downers Grove when Dan Cronin appointed him. Why didn't he require Sandack to resign before appointing to the second position? And why is Mr. Cronin so hot to trot on the dual office thing now? One might suspect politics being played...oh, never in DuPage County!

This should also include an elected official holding an appointed postition at the same time.

For example -

Mayors and Village Trustess or Councilmen should not also serve as appointed board members of Metra.

DuPage County Board members and Mayors should not also serve as appointed board members on the Water Commission.

Forest Preserve Board members should not also serve as appointed board members for the DuPage County Fair & Exposition Authority...

.... and so on.

This is a step in the right direction. Should have happened long ago.
Dale, my theory about Cronin being "hot to trot" now is that: (1) he was feeling the heat from DuPage constituents (good for people for making this an issue)...and DiCianni clearly was; and (2) this is an easier issue to deal with than his remarkably dismal failure to provide any real leadership on the issue of pensions at the County Board level.

To each of these elected officials, need we remind you that this is supposed to be about public service and not about your own compensation, double dipping or padding your own pensions?

Pensions for part time public service (which already pays a salary of $55,000/year for County Board...GREAT part time volunteer gig!) are going the way of the dodo.

Those of you with your delusions of grandeur about how you "deserve" your pensions while you cling to them with your kung fu death grip are becoming dinosaurs in front of our very eyes. Step aside and let real public servants relieve you of the "burdens" you voluntarily took on but believe you should be even more richly compensated for (while earning salaries and benefits in your day jobs AND salaries and benefit in your voluntary "service" positions). Its just a bit disgusting.
