Burglary Occurs While Homeowner is at Home

One man kept the homeowner occupied while the other raided her jewelry box.

One man entered a home on the 500 block of North Walnut while another distracted the homeowner while she was working outside Aug. 24.

The homeowner told police that while she was in her garage at 1 p.m. Friday, a white Chevy pickup truck occupied by two male Hispanics pulled into her driveway. The passenger got out of the vehicle and told the woman he could fix the cracks in the foundation of her garage. While he walked with her around the garage showing her the cracks, he was speaking to someone on his cell phone in another language. He then left without providing a business card or phone number.

The homeowner went inside the house at about 4:30 p.m. She discovered her belongings had been disturbed and several pieces of jewelry were missing.

Right on Ralph (OConnell). The "Travelers" are good at this because they start training as kids. This is what they do, and they're good at it. Sad as it is, you need to keep your doors locked when your outside, keep the garage door down and don't let anyone in your house you did not call to come. No public service or city worker just shows up to work on your house, without a call from you. When a suspicious worker shows up, call 911 as soon as it's safe to do so, or when they leave. We all need to help stop these crimes.

This is the police departments motto... "The men and women of the Elmhurst Police Department are dedicated to providing professional public safety services to our community. We proudly serve and live by our motto, “Providing the Best”."-http://elmhurst.org/index.aspx?nid=145 ... doesn't seem acurate.

How can an officer be at every home at all times?? We have to use our brains and do things that we may not be used to or ever had to do!! Example: Lock your doors when you are outside, don't give anyone info if you have not requested their service, get a house alarm....etc!!!!! Our police can educate and serve and protect the best they can!! Try to walk in the life of a police officer for a week or so............let's see how many can handle it let alone not poop your pants when presented with a call!! And NO I'm not a Police Officer.

Consider this, if an officer sees someone in a bank, business, house, or a car, how is the officer to know he’s up to no good or doesn’t belong there? An officer, due to when, where or prior information (like a suspect or car description), may stop this person, but only if the officer can articulate the reason. Officers need information from you to stop these types of crimes. Your neighbors need to call the police when they see someone who doesn’t belong at your house, when they hear glass break or wood crack, when someone is parked in your drive and they know you’re not there. The police don’t know that it’s not you or your kids. The police would much rather stop a person who can explain themselves than take a burglary report. The public needs to call when they see “a guy” running away from a bank, a grocery store, a department store and speeding away in a car. This is how criminals get stopped and arrested. I only takes a minute or two to call 911. Do you know how far a person can get in that time? It’s a lot farther than you’d think. My point is, start helping and stop blaming, it’s your job too. This is a partial repost of my 7-11-12, post. It still applies!

The problem is nobody cares anymore. They really dont and thats sad to say. When we grew up you could leave your doors unlocked at night and not worry. Know you have to lock everything up and turn on the alarm. The kids arent much better. When we wanted something we were told to get a job and buy it ourselves. Guess what, if we wanted it bad enough we did. Kids now a days just throw a tantrum until they get it or just steal it. Thats just not right. We were burglerized as well in Elmhurst. The police are doing what they can, but know its a wait and see if anything comes in thru pawn shops, etc, and is reported to them. What is the world coming too??????
