Elmhurst police reported an attempted burglary in northeast Elmhurst and a burglary in central Elmhurst this week. In each case, the resident was home at the time of the crime.

At 4:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, a Hispanic man in his early 20s rang the doorbell of a home on the 800 block of Parker. The resident was at home, heard the doorbell, then watched as the man walked back toward his car. Moments later, she heard the man enter the home through a basement window at the front of the house, police said. She yelled "Grab the gun! Grab the gun!" and the suspect left the scene, police said. The resident did not get a good look at the vehicle, and interviews with neighbors did not produce any leads, police said.

On Tuesday evening, a resident of the 100 block of East Elmhurst Avenue told police she was robbed of $2,100 worth of jewelry.

She said a white male in his late 20s, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, slim with brown hair, brown eyes and wearing a dark blue hoodie and jeans came to her door at 5 p.m., told her he was testing the water in all the apartments in her building and that he needed to test her water. The resident said there had been maintenance workers at the apartment complex most of the day, so she let him in. Once in her apartment, he went into the bathroom while the resident was in the kitchen. After he left, the victim noticed several pieces of jewelry missing from her jewelry box.
