- School: York High School
- Award: Art scholarships
York High School seniors were awarded $500 scholarships by the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild.
Caterina Salzano was awarded for her oil painting “The River,” and Glenda Lissette for a photograph titled “Cocoon.” The awards will be made at the Guild’s annual membership meeting later this month.
Salzano, who is planning a career as an artist, has taken practically every art course at York High School. ”The River” is part of her concentration on exploring the relationship between mother and daughter through culture. She researched similarities and differences, depicting them mostly in oils, but also with watercolors and colored pencils. She describes the connection between mother and child in all cultures as the connection of life.
“I especially found satisfaction in conveying the universal moments of serenity between a mother with her child,” she said.
In “The River” the child is sleeping safely and soundly, as mom toils and works, knowing her child is close-by.
Lissette is hoping to be a fashion photographer, an ocean photographer, or maybe both.
At York this year, she has been participating in a year-long project that entails taking a photo each day. Consisting mostly of self-portraits, her collection concentrated on something in her everyday life, “either a feeling, thought or event,” she said.
Her winning photograph was digitally manipulated. The hair that wraps around the girl’s head was applied digitally, as were the butterflies, which create depth to the photo. The viewer is drawn in by the eyes peering out of the cocoon of hair, as the butterflies fly freely and lyrically around the girl’s head.
