Elmhurst students can apply to be general assistants during the school year, helping librarians make name tags for story times, cleaning books, helping man the summer reading table, and acting as Book Buddies, reading and playing games once a week with second- and third-graders. The library also hires 15 responsible students in sixth through ninth grade to be program assistants, helping kindergarten and first-graders in practicing reading skills.
